For two people who were not at all sold on Girls when it started, we were strangely delighted when both it and Lena Dunham won last night — maybe especially because everyone around them seemed thrilled to tears, and we are suckers for crying. Seriously, I cannot abide any of the Housewives, but if one of them showed up at my door in tears I’d be like, “HONEY. Come in and have a Diet Coke. I’m Team Whoever You Are.”

I also am not sold on Girls. But if it is the kind of show where Anne Hathaway can appear as herself and punch someone at Whole Foods, I could give it a try.
GIRLS is a cringe fest but really, quite a brilliant jump in women writers. Bravo to her for fearless nakedness. That said, I, too, mourned her back tattoo which I couldn’t quite figure out. Was it the Kremlin? A strip mall? An Amish Village?
Lena looked wonderful – whoever did her makeup deserves mad props.
Que? The girl needs lipstick, stat. What is with all the nude lip? Or worse, frosted nude lip?? So fugs. In fact, all the Girls girls need a bright lip.
Also Lena’s dress is ageing and quite bland. A Meryl dress.
That dress was fabulous on Lena, but I wish she’d gone that one more step and put on some jewelery and a little lip color. She looks like she’s wearing this to a fitting. She still gets huge props for what a major improvement this represents.
Yes, a statement necklace or earrings would have added a lot.
My thoughts exactly. It’s a gorgeous dress, but she needs more noticeable lipstick and either larger earrings or a necklace. Still, I was happy to see her wearing something legitimately pretty.
I just felt so bad for Lena when she was hobbling around on her heels. I get it, I too am terrible at walking in heels. But, since her dress was long she probably could have gotten away with flats, or found heels that she was able to walk in.
This! Why didn’t she just kick off those shoes that we couldn’t see anyway. I was confused the caption stating it “looked so great in motion” because really she couldn’t even walk in it. Or was the hobbled walking just to further prove that she’s too cool for awards shows and high heals? Also, a necklace or a bracelet would have worked wonders for this look. But, again, she doesn’t want to look like she’s really trying, right?
Sorry, I cringed as she stumbled awkwardly through the tables to the stage and wondered why she didn’t take off the shoes that were clearly killing her feet. Twice.
I kind of like the dress, but it didn’t fit well on top and I don’t think she felt or looked like she belonged in it. She has a long way to go to find her style.
Zosia is very committed to the center part.
Really. I love, love, love that dress, but paired with her styling she looks like an Amish girl on Rumspringa.
HAHA, thanks for that guffaw! And spot on!
I disagree on Lena. That big dress is wearing her, not the other way around.
Clearly she needed monster stilettos to make it work, then she couldn’t walk in them and ended up looking like a goober during the mile long walk to the stage.
I’m tired of her. And as a fan (albeit latecomer) of GIRLS it pains me to see her being as obnoxious as folks like to say that she is.
The other two are so forgettable that I feel a little sorry for them.
PS (Not that anyone asked) but I seriously hope Season 2 is a whole lot less naked Lena. Seriously. She’s bold and unafraid. We get it. Put on a t-shirt already.
YES. Thank you! I concur wholeheartedly.
Have you seen the first episode? Not likely! All you Girls haters must be old. It’s basically the same humor as Curb (it will make you cringe in a similar way), but for people who are still in their 20′s.
Lena looks OK, but doubtful she cares very much about red carpet b.s.
She’s neither here nor there to me, but I find the whole “I’m so misunderstood” thing to be kind of grating. I probably just don’t get it though, because I’m old. I haven’t been in my 20s since last year, so the concept of the show is beyond me. I’m just gonna go eat some butter scotches and watch Murder, She Wrote.
It does take a pretty high level of immaturity to relate to the show (just yanking you about being old, if all goes as planned I too will make it into my 30′s). Is it a phenomenal series? No and I don’t think it’s trying to be. At least it’s consistently funny, somewhat unique, and *relatively* realistic about how normal humans actually behave. Anyways, that’s why I like watching it.
Wow–word. And no, “Cre-la,” I’m NOT old.
Please note, I’m replying to annabelle and rb.
Yes, what you said.
I love Girls and Lena, and I also loved the dress on her. That said, it looked a bit like the dress was wearing her and not the other way around. I wish she had made more of an effort with her hair and makeup. I wish she’d practiced walking in heels before the ceremony, or at least had her dress tailored so that she could move around comfortably. She looks ADORABLE with the pixie, but needs to learn how to style it. I also did NOT dig the severe eyeliner she chose, and I wish she’d worn a pair of chandelier earrings to highlight her beautiful face. The dress deserves better and so does she.
Lena Dunham looks so nice. It did seem somethi was off. i finally figured it out. My motherly urge wasto grab her shoulders and roll them back. She looks amazing. Her show is doing well. She was up for an award. Time to accept some confidence and stand tall. The posture diminished her whole look and she deserved to look more confident.
yes! the insecure little weird girl thing is getting old. she’s a grown-up with a grown-up career. and if she’s the voice of a generation, i feel sorry for that generation.
i watch the show and i get it. but sometimes it’s just too pathetic. she gives me the same sort of feelings that i have when i see woody allen in one of his movies.
Considering what else she’s worn, this dress is a win. I agree that accesories would have done wonders and maybe made the dress seem less overpowering. But all in all, I want her to keep going in that direction.
I have yet to see an episode of “Girls.” Depending on which friend I ask, I’m either missing out or I’m doing myself a favor. I want to see it but television watching feels like a part time job these days.
And I regret that tattoo for her and I have two myself.
Shame about the tattoo.
So agree … every outfit ever worn was spoiled by every tattoo ever inked. Dunham has a whole ‘nother spray of inked doodles across her shoulder blades. Why do people put such permanent graffiti on themselves. I will never understand.
People who have tattoos like tattoos. Simple as that.
Nope, not even those folks after a while. Tats are really trashy.
I tried to get into Girls. I sat down with my husband and watched the first four episodes, waiting for the ‘OMG this is AWESOME realization to hit’. After episode 4 we went for a walk in the frigid Ohio night to cool our rage – at the show, Hannah’s character in particular, and having wasted valuable Food Network viewing time. Given the love this TV show (and Lena) receives, I feel I’m missing something fairly significant. Lena here seems to be missing a good stylist.
You’re not the only one – I found “Girls” to be painfully bad. Weird combination of self-absorption and self-loathing going on w/Lena’s needy character. I suppose Lena’s dress is an improvement, but I don’t think she’s all-in on trying to look beautiful just yet (still a bit of that “I dare you to avert your eyes to my non-ideal body and unattractive clothes” going on).
It took me until about the sixth or seventh episode to warm up to it, but I liked the last few enough to keep going.
I am neutral on Girls. There are times I like it and times I find it all trying too hard.
What completely floored me is that Ashley Williams is Brian Williams’ daughter.
Is she, really? Oh, I love Brilliam (that’s what Jimmy Fallon calls him)! I’m delighted to know that!
i like girls, but i do not love lena dunham. nor do i like this dress. sometimes i think her non-conformist attitude makes her look more twee or more forced than anything else.
Watching her hobble around in whatever shoes she was wearing was perhaps the most awkward thing in a show filled with awkwardness. When she got up for the second award I was hoping she’d ditch her shoes but alas. I know everyone loved Amy & Tina and they were great, but seriously it felt like it took two hours just for everyone to relax and get comfortable and then it was over. Luckily awkwardness is really a popular form of entertainment right now, so it wasn’t as unbearable as it might have been.
You can tell Lena didn’t expect to win because she didn’t wear shoes she could walk to the stage in.
I’m not a fan of Girls, but I also don’t really get the hatred. It’s not my thing, but at least it tries something! And given its competition in the Best Comedy category (man, was THAT a celebration of mediocrity), that’s all it needed to deserve the win. However, Lena herself should never have beaten the two hosts, who are fabulous and hilarious and the current reigning queens.
I hate watch girls so Im glad it won.
Lena looks better than normal, center part girl looks good and Allison looks good. I sometimes feel bad for Allison: She’s trying to be all serious like about her work on Girls and trying to promote Girls in a good way and then the other 3 show up looking all hipster obnoxious like they’re too cool for it all. Im glad that didnt happen here.
I don’t know, I thought it did weird squashy things to her boobs (or made them disappear altogether), and I didn’t like the off-shoulder treatment.
I knew she had the arm tattoo, but i just saw the back tattoo in another outfit. Do. Not. Like. The Pixie is super cute, but I want her to fluff it up a little more and wear some jewelry. Subconsciously or not, I do feel like she tries to dare people to say she’s not cute and then dresses in awful (or dowdy) stuff to prove a point. I know that’s part of her Girls character, but i feel like she takes that persona on in real life too.
I thought this dress did her cleavage no favors as well, and all the off-the-shoulder sleeves did was draw attention to her tattoos.
I just could not get behind Lena’s dress… the fabric felt a little too $150-at-Macy’s-Juniors department-for-prom to me. It looks like it FEELS terrible. Had it been in a different fabric, I think it would’ve been 100% gorgeous.
I don’t hate Lena’s dress, but I don’t love it either. I think it does have a bit of prom feel to it. Her hair and makeup did look gorgeous though. I also think she’s looking so tall because she was wearing heels that she clearly could not walk in.
Allison Williams’ dress is the same for me. Don’t hate it, but she can do so much better (and she has!). Doesn’t even compare to the Emmy dress, I think.
If you can’t wear heels look for wedges, seriously…
I am not a Lena Dunham or Girls fan, but I am giving her huge points for trying here.
As others noted, the dress is wearing her. She is obviously uncomfortable in it, though. The color and concept, though, are smashing, and I loved it when she told Seacrest she was under orders to make sure her cleavage was even.
As much as I love the dovetail, I think it’s not right for her. She appears to be short waisted, so it’s folding badly around her waist should be.
However, monstrously good step in the right direction, and the pixie shows off how pretty her face is. Step by step.
I was happy for Lena because she’s just such a normal girl and has been one of my favorite actress’ best friends for years! I don’t watch the show, but if it’s really good, then I’m glad for “Girls” as well! Lena looked very cute and pretty, but she should’ve worn comfier shoes, a colorful lipstick and more bling! I love the hair & makeup on the AFI picture better! I also love the dress & cat shoes! I say FAB to both looks! Allison looked great, but how can she not? She’s gorgeous! FAB! And Zosia lost me on the hair & makeup, but the dress is FAB!
Stand up straight and SELL it, girl! You can gain a reputation for elegance simply by carrying yourself that way. Watch old Grace Kelly or Ingrid Bergman movies to see how it’s done.
Hmph. Love the color of Lena’s dress, thought it was too much dress on her though.
Zosia totally did the red carpet! I remember seeing her during the E! Red Carpet live-stream. It’s a shame I thought she looked really beautiful. She was all smiley and cute! Maybe with this season of Girls they’ll feature her more and people will start taking photographs of her more.
I didn’t think the dress was flattering to her arms, and she couldn’t walk in her shoes (it was more of a lumber), and it didn’t seem as fun and sassy as it should have been. I would have picked the orange print Naeem Khan one-shoulder dress (from the Spring 2013 line) for her, with a pair of flats she could walk in. Michael Van Der Hamm might also be a good designer for her.
But she’s carving such a unique career trajectory for herself that she ought not to be stuck in dark, staid satin.
Very nice, all three of them. I’m not about to do anything crazy like start watching the show, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Dunham’s starting to regret those tattoos already, now, but the ladies look lovely here.
Lena’s one of my best of the night. The color and the way it hugs her curves in all the right places are fab!
Surely, some number cruncher knew Girls/ LeDunham would win things, WHY would they seat them a million miles away, so we’d have to watch poor Lena hobble on her heels not once, but TWICE, for a really, really long time. Just take ‘em off girl, the gown is long, no one would know.
I think Ms. Dunham needs a stylist. I think if she wore clothes that fit her body well (I dont think this dress did) and wore her hair and makeup in flattering ways, she would be so beautiful.
I was underwhelmed by her dress. I thought it was too big and the material looked stiff. It was a step up for sure though.
I liked the dress by itself, but it was definitely wearing Dunham. And I’m sorry to say it, but she does not have the posture to pull off a ballgown like that- she was practically clumping her way up to the stage in a way that made me wish she’d just gone for a minidress and jacket so she could have been comfortable.
There are photos floating around of Zosia Mamet on the red carpet and she nailed it. I want that dress, and events at which to wear it, sent round immediately.
My toddler has those kitty cat shoes. Got them at Baby Gap.
No to Lena’s dress and tats. The dress aged her, the tats are just yuck. Cute hair, though. And while I’m not a fan of Girls, props to her for making it so young.
I’d have liked Lena’s dress better if it was a sweetheart neck rather than off-the-shoulder. That sleeve treatment really did not work with the tattoos. Other than that, a lovely dress that fit so much better than many things she wears.
Totally agree with everyone saying Lena needed to have some confidence and sell the dress. If you saw her interview with Seacrest, she told him how her stylist told her she had to pose a certain way in it, and shove it down and around to make sure it was fitting/looking right, so it was clear that she wasn’t comfortable in it.
Man Allison Williams is GORGEOUS, I think she deserves much better than that boring black dress.
I saw an individual photo of Zosia elsewhere and that lighter hair colour was a very bad decision.
I’m neither here nor there with “Girls” and feel the same about their dresses/styling. If they knew they would win, would they have amped it up? Missed opportunity there I guess!
And Brian Williams- I know! All I can think when I watch this show is that Brian doesn’t want to see his daughter doing sex scenes and DEF doesn’t want the whole world to see her breasts (which I think is why we haven’t seen them:). Love Brian and love his daughter in the show- she’s really a great actress.
My beef with Lena? Don’t slouch! Pull your shoulders back and stand up straight.
I love Zosia’s dress. I want the shorter cocktail length knockoff.
I don’t know why Lena always looks like an overupholstered sofa. Seriously, she’s not THAT big; why does she have to wear so much fabric? And does she think that hobbling around is cute or adds to her indie cred? It just makes her look like an idiot. It took me a few hours to learn how to walk in heels when I was 13, I think she can master it if she really tries.
I know next to nothing about Lena Dunham, but every time I see her somewhere, I wish she’d stand up straight. I could possibly like her dress more if she didn’t always seem like she’s trying to curl up into the fetal position.
I really want to see these shoes that she couldn’t walk in.
Oh man! I’m really disappointed about all the tattoo comments. I mean, obviously I’m a fan of them, my profile photo is a commemoration to my little brother, but still I keep being surprised that people who are fans of fashion are so adamantly NOT fans of tattoos. My take is that just like with fashion, there is bad art and good art and some people may have better taste than others (“better” being pretty subjective). The primary difference is that we can change clothes as much as we want, while tattoos are permanent, of course.
So, after reading the comments here, including Heather’s in the post, I checked for images of Lena’s tattoos: and lo! they are awesome! The two I found photos of appear to be from children’s books, Ferdinand and Eloise, specifically. Tattoos are not the province of the trashy anymore, if ever they were, but rather are an artistic expression. Anyhoodle, that’s my soapbox for today.
Thanks ! Supper Post !!http://www.lankai.com.cn/
