Grammy Awards Well Played, Rihanna, And Then… Less So

well-played

Usually, Rihanna goes for obvious over sexy, or obvious sexyness, or… sexy obviousness, or… well, you smell what I’m cooking: She’s a pretty girl with a great body and she very rarely opts for the sedate way of telling you so. And so I give three cheers to this simple yet drop-dead-knockout of an ensemble. Yes, I admit, it’s still obvious, in its way — I am adding this sentence after all the commenters wondered if I am blind or insane — but my point is that there is something more grown up about it than, say, this. And Fug is a comparative science. So even though her hair reminds me of 1986 and should never be seen without matching pegged jeans, some thick ankle socks, and canvas Keds, I’m liking the direction she’s going.

The Armani (?) dress was awesome and the shoes were to die for!!!!! But the rest was a hot. mess. (Including her still-not-confirmed-hoping-against-hope-it-isn’t-true dating choices).

    • Lina

Eh. The black dress would be crazy revealing on anyone else and she manages to take what should be an elegant gown and make it seem trashy with the choice of styling. The rest is her usual tacky self.

  2. cat

i cannot get past that atrocious hair!! but the black dress is lovely…

  3. betty

hmm… so you’re saying that a neckline down to the bellybutton isn’t obvious sexyness?

    • Heather

By comparison to her past ensembles, which is what I was getting at, I don’t think it is.

    • neiges

Right, same question I was asking myself.
I say double-standard! Erin Wasson (perhaps it wasn’t this name exactly) can’t show her bony and boobless sternum and Rihana can?
Well now about the dress : been done, lot’s of people been there, nothing to be happy about. But I understand the sigh of relief (which I believe this post to be, really), because she doesn’t look, how can I put it… as in our faces as she usually does. But then again, looking at that sternum (which I have nothing against, mind you) and the hair… ok, here we go again, must stop. Stop.

      • lori

Erin Wasson wasn’t just showing her sternum; she was wearing a “dress” with a sheer top and a “skirt” that was just a few strips of cloth. She was just barely this side of naked.

      • guerra

doesnt even compare to erin. seriously look at both “dresses”

  4. Aoife

Did you not see the back? With the weird thong-like strap above her ass which was veering on showing us the crack? Although her hair is so awful I’m surprised I noticed this. Remind me of when everyone I know discovered Sun-in and some took it too far.

  5. filmcricket

The fact that Brown got to perform twice, won at least once, and got a standing O made me ill. Love this piece, and check out the quote from the Grammys’ producer: http://hellogiggles.com/im-not-okay-with-chris-brown-performing-at-the-grammys-and-im-not-sure-why-you-are

That ugliness aside, I seriously dislike sternum dresses and that black one also had no back, so while definitely simple, it was pretty “obviously sexy” to me. She looked great during the performance, though.

    • AndersonicTK421

      oh filmcricket, I FEEL you.

When his nastiness appeared and I was alerted to his nom status – I couldn’t help but ask the room “WHY DOES HE EVEN HAVE A RECORDING CONTRACT?”

Look forward to reading the link, thanks.

    • missmare

I agree. I changed the channel. I won’t have that abuser in my house.

    • lori

And that is why I didn’t watch the Grammys, even though it KILLED me not to see The Civil Wars perform and win.

  6. Annie E

Setting aside everything I have to say about Chris Brown, Rihanna’s hair is AWFUL but I like those boots she performed in.

  7. Willow

I really love the dress, it’s sultry and revealing in all the right ways, but that hair! It’s like she’s being eaten by a Werepastry.

  8. Heather

I am amending the original post to hopefully better reflect what I meant — yes, this is obvious in its way, but I think it’s a lot more CHIC than some of her past obviousness.

    • neiges

Yes, absolutely. Your post is interesting as I really like this cleavage (it’s saucy! it’s hot!) but she makes it look so evidently about sex whereas Goop doesn’t. It is really about someone’s vibes, rather than what they wear sometimes. Don’t change your post, it’s good for conversation. We are being rhetorical!

      • Heather

Fear not! I’m not changing the opinion, just trying to clarify it. And I think GOOP has, and will, worn dresses VERY much like this (she loves a plunging torso). For Rihanna, it’s a step in a grown-up direction.

  9. Thomas

I have this urge to make Peking duck and then scrub it with a loofah.

  10. Remi

she couldn’t find two complete shoes for the first picture? That just can’t be comfortable even by heels standards.

  11. Jo

The back of this dress totally killed the ‘whoa’ effect of the front. Yuck.

  12. Sarah L.

That hair has a Tina Turner thing going on. But I also see some Goldie Hawn in there.

  13. Lilywise

This dress is a green floral print away from being J.Lo’s infamous dress. Sure, in black it looks more like a Gwyneth Paltrow choice, but I still kept fearing for a nip slip every time the cameras were on her.

  14. Mahastee

So high-waisted leather shorts and growing out your home bleach-job are a thing now? I must be old, or perhaps Rihanna’s time machine has just slipped back to a Guns N’ Roses concert in 1989.

  15. C-No

That dress is not subtle, but it is hot. And I really like her hair, she looks like a lion. Or Tina Turner. But she really does not look well. She looks sad and tired.

  16. electric

I never thought I would say this, but those leather booty shorts were seriously adorbale

  17. Melly

Call me crazy, I like all of them. Whatever isn’t good in the usual sense, somehow ends up making her look sexier in the way she wants to be sexy, which is get-down sexy.

  18. The Other Molly

    Her hair is gross.
If you are doing to dye your hair blonde, dye ALL of it.
    INCLUDING the ROOTS.

  19. Gigi

Red Carpet: Look, y’all! Heather Locklear’s feeling better!! Hi Heather, good to see you!

    On Stage: Tina Turnover.

  20. RAIE

Did no one notice that Rihanna and Alicia Keys were wearing the same shoes???

    • AndersonicTK421

I did. And I still haven’t figured out how those shoes work. And I mean, “stay on feet.”

  21. edstoker

Beside the ultraclassy Adele, Rhianna looked like a hooker last night!

  22. edstoker

…and not a very expensive one!

  23. Kara

I absolutely hate her hair. The blonde doesn’t go with her skin tone, and the roots look like shit. The style isn’t bad – I like the kind of messy, touseled look – but the color is hideous. (And I can’t help but wonder about her hair’s health.)

The down-to-there dress made me think “Wow, Rihanna is thin.” I never thought she was fat, obviously, because she never was, but when she turned to the side in this I thought “Wow, skinny.”

  24. AndersonicTK421

Heather: that pantsuit? Definitely Kill With Fire.

  25. missmare

not buying it. this girl is trashy. just utter trash. I don’t like her clothes. I don’t like her ‘act”. I don’t like her.

  26. jillybean

So no one else things she looks like Goldie Hawn circa her “Overboard” era? I had to do a double take. Rhianna as Goldie Hawn is just too weird.

  27. vandalfan

I think her hair and all her outfits are great and show her really astonishing beauty.

But all those tats to me say self-loathing, reuniting with the abusive little boy creep (him? Michael Vik? Mike Tyson? How are they allowed in polite society?) say self-esteem issues, and all together, I’m afraid we’re looking at the next Whitney Houston.

  28. Kristina

I mean this as a compliment because I think she is a lovely girl, but when I saw her on the red carpet I thought she looked like the child of Goldie Hawn circa Wildcats and Private Dancer Tina Turner. Her performance outfit only reinforced the connection.

  29. anonymoose

    Fried and fug.

  30. anonymoose

Rihanna looks played, yes, but not well-played.

  31. Veronica

I actually rather liked the Armani on her. It is sexy – but that is her and she obviously enjoys being sexy as opposed to having it forced on her the way it occasionally feels with other female starlets.

I do have to admit I dislike the blonde hair on her. Really dislike it. I’ll be glad when she goes back to a darker shade.

  32. ri-dic

    Ummm…no.

  33. Alena

I adore the Armani dress. She is stunning in it. And I unashamedly love her hair. The other outfits…. not so much.

  34. Angela

She looks like 80′s Goldie Hawn. I like it.

  35. Guerra

Love her in this dress – I think she is beautiful!! But I think the hair could of been done better maybe a gentle balayage. It’s a touch to yellow for her shade

  36. Sajorina

I thought she looked beautiful & hot on the red carpert, but I can’t stand her 1985 Tina Turner’s “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” hair! I think she looked cute while performing… She definitely pulled off those leather shorts by doing the smart thing of wearing them with tights & boots, instead of stipper heels! OVERALL FAB! And, my plastic surgeon draw on my boobs before the reduction surgery and it looked better than her last outfit! FUG!

  37. Lily1214

I think she looks much much better as a redhead.

  38. Rho

She looks like she danced her way out of a Rico Suave music video and onto the Grammy stage. Why do so many ‘pop starlets’ insist on looking totally ridiculous when they perform?

  39. rainbow

she does look beautiful, but is it just me or is she getting VERY THIN?? i don’t like.

  40. NYCGirl

Well, I suppose it is more adult, but it’s also still too adults-only.

  41. Julie

I think she’s beautiful too, but I agree with @rainbow, that she’s also getting really thin. She reminds me a little about Nicole Richie in her bubble-head-era.
I actually thought the black dress was a pantsuit… and still thought it was kinda nice :)

  42. sarky

does having bigger hair, lead to the impression of a smaller torso? Maybe Miss Rhi rhi is onto sumthin, and I gots to get me a monster ‘fro wig..

  43. Dressed Well

    Great dress!
