Maybe L.A.’s Pacific Design Center should change its name to No, Not That Kind Of Design Center, so that nobody else commissions something for their exterior from a place that’s supposed to deal with interiors. It’s like Sinatra said: “Regrets, I’ve had a few.” And last night, if her expressions are to be judged, I think Emma was having them on an IV drip.

NICE slip in of the Neville at the last slide! J’approve!!!
Ugh, Emma, I think you are wonderful and lovely, but that dress is seriously fug.
Ooooo…Neville is looking Mad Men-y. LOVE IT!
Matt Lewis Matt Lewis Matt Lewis Matt Lewis Matt Lewis…
…must be the sugar that sweetens this for me. I don’t hate the design of the dress, I think it’s interesting, but I don’t like the colors together. Not sure what colors would be better though.
And there is a lot of stuff going on around her eyes. Perhaps too much.
Oh, that’s just wrong.
It’s awesome that both Neville and the actor who played him get their chance to shine in this movie. Yay for the removal of the awful fake Neville teeth.
It really is astonishing how her facial expression in every one of those pictures truly communicates a sort of weary patience. As though she really is just over all this and knows that dress was just odd looking and unbalanced. Did she smile even once during this premier? I’m sure she did, but if this photo series is to be believed, she spent the entire evening figuratively tapping her foot with annoyance. But can you imagine having to see this movie for the umpteenth time when you’re IN it? I’d spend a succession of evenings cringing, and alternating between beating myself up, and wanting to beat the snot out of the director/camera man/film editor who managed to get that shot in there that made my butt look like the back of a lorry.
I think that dress is incredible (in a great way); I’m actually surprised that I seem to be in the minority here so far. (But a smile from Emma would certainly be nice.)
3 things:
*yes, this dress is a rather surprising choice, but it’s edgy and a dramatic way to go out.
*the makeup is insane but i love it, and it looks better than Rupert’s hair, so….
*THANK YOU FOR THE MATTNESS AT THE END.
Wow, Emma looks really unhappy in all these pictures. I applaud her for taking a risk with this dress, but it’s “too much look” for her. Not too mention too much eye makeup, yikes.
Matt Lewis at the end certainly makes up for it, though. Yum!
Tom & Lorenzo featured a Vogue editorial yesterday that included this dress, and I thought at the time that it looked like a heavy dress falling off and exposing undergarments. Which I’m sure is the point. But man, it looks even crazier out of a magazine and in the real world, doesn’t it? The bottom part seems like it would have made a perfectly pretty dress, too. Poor Emma!
Rupert looks better than usual.
I think this one was a miss. Bummer, Emma is so pretty.
Huh. Yeah. I…like it. The fit of the bodice is amazing–architectural while still being incredibly flattering. I mean–look at her boobs! That dress is taking such good care of them! And, yes, the skirt is completely whack-a-doo, but I find it entertaining, and I think the asymmetry and large-but-carefully-placed folds thing is really well done.
This dress is unquestionably horrible. But where is the well played with the dress she wore to the after party following the premiere in London? It was so cute!
I really want Matt cast in Mad Men as Lane Pryce’s dashing son who starts taking on the family business. I don’t think cameras could survive the combined hotness of Neville Longbottom and Don Draper in the same scene, though.
I do actually love Emma’s dress, but it’s the hair and makeup that ruin it for me. Especially with her Stewart-esque frowny face.
I can’t help it. I frickin LOVE this dress. I’d wear it in a heartbeat. If I had an occasion to wear it. Which. I don’t. BUT STILL.
I actually like this dress quite a lot, but I think it’s utterly wasted at this event — except to show off her body, which is amazing.
Why does Rupert (apparently) only have the one suit jacket? WHY? The crocodile print was fine once, but it’s not for every day!
In the first photo, it looks like the orangey drape is only about a foot long, which I like. The fact that it’s actually floor-length is kind of off-putting. I think she looks gorgeous, though, and I like that it’s a dramatic ending for the Potter series. I think the dress would be best without the orange draping.
Well played with the Matt Lewis!
The dress isn’t awful, but I’m not digging the contrast between the bodice material and the skirt or how broad it makes her look in the shoulders. And if she’d only laid off the eye makeup and had her hair less severe it would have helped as well.
But she could have so turned it around if she’d taken a page from Natalia Tena and simply acted like it was the best dress evah! Her body language isn’t selling it and therefore we’re not buying it.
I see Rupert still hasn’t found a comb. Dan’s got a bit of hair in his face, too, but he just looks a little windblown and not like he hasn’t showered in days. But hey, Rupert at least wore a suit!
Bedsheets stapled to a Spanx slip. And why they are stapled in such a fashion as to highlight her pelvis, I do not know. NEXT!
I love the dress. I don’t love her eye makeup, and did she get a sad phone call right before this photo op? But the dress? Fantastic, gorgeous, looks good on her plus putting the art in haute couture in a wearable way, and I don’t know why she doesn’t look happier about it. ACCIO SWINTON, EMMA!
Oh thank goodness that last slide was in there to redeem that mess around her hips. What on earth was she thinking? And the huge picture of her face is SCARY. No one’s head should be that big on my computer screen.
Call me crazy, but I like Emma’s dress. It’s original. I think the main problem is the make-up, is too harsh. Once again, Matt steals the show.
Dear Watson,
Where’s Holmes? Add a little blood to the make up and you’ll need saving from that vampire movie you’re appearing in next.
So much laughing. Brava.
Honestly, I think this dress could have worked if Emma hadn’t looked so darn uncomfortable all the time. She’s got the charisma for it, but wasn’t letting it out. Maybe she was concerned that Dan had finally gone ’round the bend. He looks a little manic in all these pics.
You’re turning me into an obsessed crazy person for Matt Lewis. Thank you.
One of your best – loved all the puns. .By the time Matt showed up I was laughing so hard I banged my head on the keyboard.
@Sandra- “Bedsheets stapled to a Spanx slip.” WORD. And it looks like Emma knows it. She may be regretting not just tossing up a swash of that hip fabric over her shoulder, a la Brigadoon. At least that would make sense. The color is great, but her makeup is rather heavy for an outdoor appearance. Those eyelashes must stick together in the heat.
Hot damn Matt Lewis!
I have to agree with Emily on the dress. It looks like a very heavy dress falling off and showing Emma’s body shaper. That’s a problem on several of levels, not least of which is that Emma does not need a body shaper and even the suggestion that she’s wearing one makes me sad. The whole business is bad worse by the hair and especially the make-up. Poor girl looks like she hasn’t slept in a year. That may very well be true, but make-up is supposed to cover that, not accentuate it.
I love the dress except it’s in serious need of some boning to smooth out those waist wrinkles! The make-up doesn’t suit her though, and she looks seriously pissed off.
Great, great fake dialogue and it really matches. I can just imagine those two teasing her like crazy for the last 10 years. The dress is a miss, but I give her credit for being daring. It’s high fashion that doesn’t quite work, but how many young stars are that bold? I can see where it was going, it just didn’t get there. At first I thought the bodice was crazy too tight, but then I thought of J-Lo’s overly tight dress and realized that the bodice is structured and fits her perfectly, but it seems disconnected from the rest of the dress. And that color is tough. She nearly pulls it off thanks to her lovely skin, but a gallant miss. Thanks for Matt! I only wish Emma was in a shot with him.
Count me among the crazy folk who seriously love this dress. All Emma’s look needs is a bright smile.
I kind of love how she towers over them. Shoes! Gotta see the shoes!
The first picture reminds me of those old timey drawings where the man is wearing naught but a barrel with suspenders. WHERE ARE YOUR SUSPENDERS EMMA?
The architecture of the dress is very cool, but the color (of the skirt especially) is horrid. I’m not sure I could like anything in that color, but certainly nothing floor length and not this. Just too much.
I actually loved that dress when I first saw photos; I thought it would get a “well-played” for sure.
Yes to Matt Lewis in Mad Men!
I liked the dress on the runway (think it was the closing dress, but not 100% sure), and I love the bodice, but I personally don’t think the whole thing works here. There were many great cocktail length frocks in said collection that may have looked better, but I can understand the wanting-to-go-out-with-a-bang sentiment. Then again Elie Saab showed lots of lovely, SPARKLY things in his aw11, that are in line with my perception of Emma’s style… Oh well, good try.
I love this dress. It’s incredibly interesting and dramatic and the colour (while I would never be able to pull it off myself) is SO RICH. Her makeup and hair make me sad though, and I suspect that’s what she’s suffering from. It’s like she got her head dunked in a barrel and then attacked at the MAC counter.
Dan and Rupert make my heart so happy– they’re so giggly and doofy and I love them together… but seriously Rupert. You look clean and happy from the temples down. Wash and COMB the hair or we’ll have to have an imaginary breakup fight in our imaginary relationship.
ha ha ha the puns they just keep coming!!! Hilarious post, and many thanks for the man-dessert at the end. I am LOVING how Matt Lewis is becoming the new hot mascot around here. No offense to the battalions of Pacey fans, but really, I find him kinda on a par with Tobey Maguire in the cuteness quotient, and Matt Lewis is a more than suitable alternative.
Total NO from me. And the color is awful on her.
And yummmmmmm for Matt Lewis!
Er, and now that I read what I just wrote, it sounded really mean to Pacey and Tobey M., so let me just say that I’m a jerk and I’m sorry and that I’ll never say that again. Except that OH HONEY DO I EVER PREFER MATT LEWIS EVEN THOUGH THOSE OTHER 2 ARE NICE ENOUGH LOOKING IN THEIR OWN WAYS. There, I fixed it?
I think what gets me, which I forgot to mention, is that the bodice in close-up almost looks like distressed brown denim. Major ugh.
On another post this week, someone described her as a pretty little kitten and now that’s all I can think of when I look at her. Yes, I know she’s an intelligent young woman, but the soft shaggy hair and the floofy, flirty clothes just seem to suit her….and I think she knows it. Think of how effervescent she was in those clothes. Compare that with her expression here. The makeup is too much, just toooo darn much. And though that slicked back hair works for some (Isabella Rosselini comes to mind) it is too severe for someone so young with such soft features. As for the dress, I agree with the posters that say this was a miss, an “haute” miss, but a miss nevertheless. Still she gets major points for trying something bold and haute even if it didn’t work out. To be honest, I don’t think anyone can carry this off. It’s a fug dress.
Matt Lewis. You tasty, heroic piece of eye candy! Can we just do a John Hamm thing with him, and toss handsome photos of him in unrelated posts just for kicks and giggles? Seeing him made my morning soooo much better. In regards to Emma, I actually really like the concept of the dress. I think the bodice is GORGEOUS, but I don’t like the color of the bodice with the color of the skirt. I think it would have been effective with two more contrasting colors. Otherwise, I think its great and I wouldn’t change the construction of it. I also have to agree with other comments – there’s way too much eye makeup going on. I think with that much dress a subtle eye would worked better.
I, too, love this dress. Completely. I even like the eye makeup.
LOVE this dress. I feel like I shouldn’t like it, but I do!
I love the dress, she looks beautiful in it and the colour of the skirt matches Rupert’s hair perfectly!
Man she looks like she wants to take everyone out, its kinda scary. The dress looks mismatched, as though they stuck the wrong bodice on the wrong skirt. Her makeup is awful, I feel like those colors don’t work for her. but yay Neville at the end!
This is the same dress worn by the Downtown Abbey gal, in an editorial. Which is where it belongs, in a nice posed shot in a magazine. Unfortunately, it’s not meant to actually wear out! Love the hair and make up though, fierce!
The Neville Bomb made me laugh my ass off. And then inappropriately swoon.
Hate hate hate the dress. And the slicked back hair and overdone eye makeup.
Does Rupert own a single normal suit? That boy needs to take sartorial lessons from the delightful Matt Lewis. Oh, picture 7, thank you for being there.
Matt Lewis should be in all these photo galleries
I don’t hate the design, but I have 3 wishes: 1) make it a different colour, maybe royal purple bodice with a wine skirt? Or sky blue and aqua? I don’t know, just make it something other than brown and mustard; 2) ease back on the eye makeup about 10 clicks; and 3) SMILE, for goodness sake! I think it would make a world of difference if it looked like at least she was enjoying it.
Just cited Blake Lively for “overreach” and now this comes along. Miss Watson only occasionally overreaches, but this one is Big Time.
To make matters worse for her, the divine Michelle Dockery is wearing this to great effect in VogueUK’s ‘Crawley sisters’ ed. Admittedly, Michelle is seated in the photo – which mitigates some of the stapled-on factor – but I’m sure she’d still kill it on a red carpet! She’s got the goods to sell it, which this gown requires, and Emma doesn’t.
See, now you’re just pandering with the Matthew Lewis pop-in.
But speaking of pandering, poll time: who wants to see Matthew Lewis and Prince Harry in a caper movie?
Heh. Do you realize you wrote “Ron” instead of “Rupert” on the bottom of page 4? I bet these kids are going to have to deal with that kind of thing their whole lives. The whole “I am not Ron Weasley” syndrome.
Emma’s dress looks better from the front than from the side. That’s about the best I can say for it. Oh, and the fabric that the bottom part is made from is really pretty. If she’d worn a simpler dress made of that fabric, we might have had a win. I do get that she was trying to go for something big and different and artsy, and I applaud her for doing that in a classy way, but this was a miss in my book.
Oh, and Matt Lewis is still adorbs.
It’s testament to Matt Lewis’ hotness that he is still my favorite part of this post, because PUNS ARE MY FAVORITE! That was seriously amazing. You should enter the pun olympics.
I LOVE THE DRESS!!! She looks fab!
Wow. If you go full size on the 2nd pic, the hem looks seriously frayed and there is an odd seam across the front panel as though someone had stepped on the dress just before red carpet time, ripped the panel and made a hasty repair. And the bodice does look like worn brown denim. Ugh indeed.
I love that she wore a dramatic dress, w/ hair & makeup to fit. Love her, love it all.
your fake dialogue was great and you picked good awkward face photos for it … but ive seen pics of her smiling and laughing here and in those I thought she was gorgeous and the draping and fall of the gold fabric was really well done. and whoever pointed out how well this bodice is dealing with her chest is right on! so many other ladies dont treat the girls with this much care and respect
also LOVE Matt, sneak him in more often
I’m sorry, were we supposed to remember the Emma Watson pics after the surprise Neville hotness? Cos I feel like Gilderoy Lockhart — I know there’s something else going on, I just can’t quite remember…
I think the dress looks great and I love the colour of the skirt, but the slicked back hair and Cleopatra eyes are too severe.
I’m fine with Matt Lewis showing up anywhere. This slide show, at my house… LOL.
Well… the eye makeup is pretty fierce.
I would like to know what setting Matt’s got his razor set on, because his scruff is the only thing I can find fault with. Like, is he too tired to shave right before the premiere? Is he showing off because it seems like Dan, Rupert, and Tom can’t grow beards?
I need to know.
Best post ever.
Love, love, love the dress. Wrong color for her, though.
Emma + Bitchface = Posh
I actually liked the dress on the runway, but somehow on Emma the proportions look off. Like the bodice is too long on her or something. I dig the texture and color and material. Basically everything in theory, but in execution leaves me with my head cocked to the side. Not helping is that these are certainly least flattering photos of both her and the dress from what I have seen. But makes for GREAT dialog!
Ok, long time reader – first time poster… You finally forced my hand by sliding NEVILLE!!! in at the end. Hysterical AND Awesome.
Know I’m in a bit of the minority: Love the Dress. A bold/daring/crazy(?) choice for this huge event but damn – it is stunning on Emma. Unfortunately, her eye makeup is a car crash from which you just can’t look away.
Haha! It’s the corpse-flower dress: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2004-10/08/xin_341001080929190126127.jpg
OK, but is Dan wearing a SEE-THROUGH SHIRT? And if so, how has this not been commented on?!
There’s definitely something odd going on with that dress. You can see the full thing best in images #2 and #7. The top, which may or may not be distressed brown denim, looks like it’s made out of the muslin used to check the fit of a pattern before the real material is actually cut. It’s also fraying on top. The bottom of the skirt has an extra square sewn in, possibly to replace a damaged section; it was evidently done at the last minute because it’s poorly executed and unfinished at the hem — which is also fraying.
Saw her appearance on Letterman last night. Despite the helmet hair and monosleeved disco ball she was sporting, she was utterly adorable and charming. http://www.hollywoodlife.com/2011/07/12/emma-watson-david-letterman-harry-potter-premiere/
Oops, I meant images #2 and #6.
I heard reports that Emma was rather sick during this premier (understandably with all the promoting going on!) So, perhaps this accounts for her less than cheerful demeanor. I would be pissed if it was 100 degrees, I was was sick, and I was wearing some crazy dress.
The ugliest thing I’ve ever seen her wear. An indifferent strapless swimsuit surrounded by a collapsed beach cabana. Horrific.
Okay, when I first saw the dress I thought: “Looks like Belle (from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast) is midway through undressing for the Beast for some sexyfuntime after their big ballroom dance.”
…Anyone else see it??
(And yes, my childhood is now officially ruined. Lol.)
oh Emma. that dress. not ok.
but I freaking loved all those puns – and don’t even get me started on how happy I was to see MATT LEWIS pop up on my screen. yum.
Oh HELLO Matt Lewis. What are you saying? You’re my age? Well give us a ring.
Emma Watson: you too, give us a ring, and we will go shopping for a new dress. Jesus.
Oh, Emma. I admire your plucky spirit, but that is too much dress for you. You’ll only be young once. Why no Marchesa on this festive but significant occasion?
As to Matt Lewis: YES, PLEASE! I recall in the first part of Deathly Hallows, the dark wizards stop the Hogwarts Express and go searching the train for Harry Potter, et al, and when they come to the carriage where Neville is, he stands up (all tall and man-like) and says something in the vein of “Hey, idiots, they’re NOT HERE!” I honestly swooned a little and thought, “Neville’s grown up and gotten hot.” I can’t wait to see him *spoiler* lead the battle of Hogwarts and slay Nagini. The movie better get it right. Neville is the Everyman (Everywizard?) Hero and (sweet revenge) he’s ended up way better-looking than the Chosen One.
I guess that I am the only one who thought that she pulled off this entire look, especially the hair and makeup. It’s all very high fashion and slightly edgy. I like seeing here and knowing that I am looking at Emma Waston and not Hermione Granger. In some of the pics it looks like she could be standing up a little bit more confidently, that would have helped her to sell it to everyone.
It’s just too body-conforming for me. Reminds me of the Rebecca Romijn in X-men. I feel pervy just looking at it. And old.
This is certainly a divisive dress, isn’t it? I love it, I love the sartorial tension caused by the relatively rough fabric of the fitted bodice, and the luxe shine and volume of the skirt fabric. And it looks incredible on her.
The eye makeup is cracktastic, however.
Never, in a million years, would I have guessed that of all the Harry Potter kids Neville Longbottom would turn out to be the hottest. Go figure.
matt lewis looks like a young clive owen. hot damn!
GAH, that Neville. So, so, so fine. FINE! WHOO! DAMN!
Another minority heard from: I really love the dress. I really do.
Love the dress, especially that unusual color!
I think she took a risk and she looks pretty awesome. I love the hair, the make-up and even that wacky dress.
Am I the only one who thinks Neville is a big geeky/gangly, and, well, not so cute at all? ::ducks::
The dress is odd because the draping starts so low. Perhaps if it started a bit higher. Also, who adds eyeshadow that makes it appear as if Mr. Sandman dumped a truckload of crust in your eyes? Ew.
The reason we’re not buying it is that she’s not selling it. I think it’s pretty nifty.
Ok, it would be soooooo cool if the dress came with a moat ! Could you imagine little fishies swimming around her hips ?
DAMN YOU. I almost spit my drink out ALL OVER MY COMPUTER at the last picture!
Just kidding (about the “damn you”—I really was taking a drink as I clicked from pic 6 to 7). Hilarious. I love you girls.
BAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I LOVE YOU GUYS!!
@Alix: yes! Also, did anyone else notice that in the close-up of her face, it looks like she has something (a glued-on jewel? a teardrop?) in the outside corner of her eye? I think (hope) it’s just a trick of the camera, but it freaked me out.
Here’s the thing about Emma Watson: not being a HP fan (I’m sorry! I think I’m too old or something), I was barely aware of her existence until she got her hair in that super short pixie. Of all the starlets who went with that cut (and there were/are a lot), I thought she pulled it off the best. At that point, I realized that she is a very pretty girl who generally wears clothes very well and I became a fan. SO . . . I have to say I’m very disappointed by this dress. I recognize that it’s haute couture, but what does that matter if it doesn’t flatter her? I actually kind of like the color of the skirt (although I agree that there are not a lot of skin tones that can pull it off), but the bodice color is simply drab and would be unflattering on anyone. But mostly, I think the dress is wearing her, instead of the other way round. I’m not sure who could pull this dress off. She’s certainly slender enough, so maybe someone taller? The makeup and hair absolutely don’t help — agree with previous comments that the former is too heavy and the latter is too severe. And while I agree that a smile would have been nice (it always is), I don’t think it would have saved this mess.
I thought this dress looked stunning on Michelle Dockery in the Vogue shoot, and I suspect Emma would have rocked it in a similar shoot. I just don’t think it works so well worn outside of a photo shoot. I absolutely love that she has the guts to go for outfits that are off the beaten path, though, even if they don’t always work.
I’d probably be irked if I had to wear a tight burlap bodice too. Just sayin…
Rupert Grint is not allowed to discuss fashion AT ALL. And…is that a sheer shirt Radcliffe is wearing?
I actually like the dress. It is interesting in an architectural kind of way (might have been better for some other more formal event) but the makeup is too heavy for her. Add in the severe hair and it just does not work but with lighter makeup and a smile she could have sold it.
I really like the colour that going on in the dress skirt…hate the top, looks like a denim dress :/
It looks like she’s standing in a sack.
God love her, I think she’s exhausted, and has been crying about this being over, and it’s hotter than hell in NYC, and this dress isn’t what she thought it would be.
Altho I can’t imagine trying this on and not saying, “Umm, I don’t think so”. Especially since she looked so gorgeous last week in London, and seemed to be having a great time, even when she got a bit teary about it.
It does make one wonder if the boys weren’t teasing her about the dress, or about crying, they are having a laugh and she looks a little peeved at them.
But you know what Emma? You are one of the stars in the biggest movie franchise ever. You were brilliant and no one can ever take that away from you. You’ll look back at the photos of yourself in this dress and have a good laugh and tell everyone to go to hell while you count your money.
Matt Lewis! Thank you for that!
Not sure how these public movie events play out, but surely she didn’t have to sit down in that thing at any time? How could she? While she’s standing up I place it in the ‘she’s doing it pretty well’ camp.
holy crap is SJP wearing this same dress in her Vogue spread?????????? http://www.vogue.com/magazine/article/sarah-jessica-parker-show-and-tell/#/magazine-gallery/sarah-jessica-parker-show-and-tell/1
MATT LEWIS COME TO ME.
I love Emma’s makeup! Wowaweewa amazing. I don’t mind her dress so much..
Y’know — part of what makes your dialogue so BRILLIANT is that the boys really are rather jolly in these shots. I mean, if they’re not saying what you interpreted, what ARE they saying? Because they are having a grand old time and she most definitely is not. The more I look at it, the more I think of Emma as me at about 4th grade and my brothers at their very most meanest. Poor thing.
Give you an example of my brothers and The Mean? Ok, here’s one: they made fun of me — incessantly — for how greasy my hair was. I mean on and on and on and on. Egg frying jokes, sliding jokes, anything grease-related they teased me about. Do you know not ONCE did anyone ever say, “you need to wash your hair.” So there I was with my weekly Saturday showers (designated by my mother, no less), and no one ever said, “just wash your hair more than once a week and you’ll be fine, honey.” Sad. You’d look like Emma Watson too, if those two mean boys were your brothers. Ironically, now you think her hair product is grease, don’t you?
I honestly think Matt Lewis could be the next James Bond. Can we get someone to make that happen?
Sorry, I think she and the dress are fabulous.
I guess I too am one of the few who likes this dress. It is utterly unique and interesting. There are probably structural or archtectural terms for what I am about to say but it seems like the bottom of the dress is explicitly designed to have the wearer emerge from the dress, as if it was made for her and only her, like a spotlight. I like it.
not sorry, like dress!
Ugh. She looks terrible! It looks like someone safety-pinned her grandmother’s sheet to her dress. The color washes her out and the make-up… good grief, prolly not necessary to put all of it on at once. She’s allowed a fashion flub here and there, but this is an #epicfail.
I was in a wedding and the bride hired people to do our hair and makeup and let’s just say, I felt like Emma looks in all the photos. But what could I do? There was nothing I could do. I think when you’re away from home, you have a dress, you get done up and have 20 minutes to get to the event…even if you have second thoughts there’s not a thing you can do about it.
I think if she’d just kept her hair normal, the dress and makeup would have been great. I think the dress needs the dramatic face, but softer hair would have balanced it.
just saw emma move and talk in this dress and makeup on tv, and it’s really quite fetching. more so than in stills. look for the video of the premiere and you’ll see what i mean.
that last photo cracked me up – harry’s posture makes him look like he just grew boobs! too funny. totally deflates the natty nature of this shirt/tie/jacket combo.
It’s like Emma picked it because she thought it would be as fun to wear as the Oscar de la Renta she wore a couple of days ago to the Harry Potter premier- and then it just wasn’t.
I saw this dress on a different website and fell in love with it. Then I check in with you guys and see that you hate it! I don’t get it. I think it’s gorgeous and dramatic and she’s definitely pulling off that bodice.
I feel sorry for the sweet girl. I can imagine her being all excited about Ooh YES I’m going to be edgy and radical and AWAY with the repurposed prom dress fashion and girly flapper wear. And I’m sure she was surrounded by stylists who were saying yes yes you MUST darling you MUST you look aMAzing.
But as soon as she got out on the red carpet alone she couldn’t ignore it anymore, that she wasn’t wearing a dress, she was being WORN by Fashion. She isn’t Tilda Swinton or Cate Blanchett who can wear dresses like that because they have that attitude that says “I KNOW most of you HATE this dress but I LOVE it and YOU are a FOOL!” for heaven’s sake. She’s still a girl who cares…she CARES if you like the dress and she can tell everyone hates it.
And then the boys WERE probably taking the piss, because that’s what boys do, and if it had been any other night she would have joined in, but she had thought that tonight was going to be magic…she was going to emerge as this wild and edgy butterfly, but instead she died on the red carpet and was heartbroken.
I was all prepared to criticize you for cutting Neville out of the penaltimate group shoot but then you did not disappoint. I think of all the Potter kids Matt Lewis best matches his charactor since it makes complete sense that he would have a handsomeness to go with all that gained confidence. Poor Dan did not age as I would have imagined Harry would.
Why does she try SO hard?
This dress is just downright fantastic. I love watching someone young and playful discovering her style sense and taking the kinds of chances that someone her age should take with fashion. At least she’s not out there looking like the endless parade of cracked out, slutty starlets that pass for young talent these days. Kudos, Emma, for taking style risks. I think even at her worst, she’s miles ahead of her generation. She’s a junior Cate Blanchett. Even when she goes batsh*t crazy, she’s gorgeous.
My feelings are a little mixed. On one hand, I think it’s a really unique cut and choice of color. On the other hand, I wish the draping fabric flowed more naturally out of the bodice – it seems to gather at a specific line around her waist, which sort of ruins the illusion of the falling fabric for me. The hem at the top of the bodice also seems strangely ragged at certain angles – is it just a trick of the camera, maybe? – and while I like the texture of the top, but the lines running through it make it look unfinished. Maybe that was the intent? Over all, I think I really do like the dress, aforementioned issues aside.
I do wish she was smiling more, though. It’s sort of off putting, especially because she is normally so chipper. Maybe she was tired/feeling ill/etc.? I’ll give her a pass based on past behavior, but I really hope this isn’t a start of Emma Watson: The Kristen Stewart tour.
Emma Watson is very clearly trying not to cry, as she is emotional about coming to the end of a ten year project.
I usually don’t go for dresses like this but I think it’s edgy, beautiful and spectacular. And simple. The patter is hilarious and I love Neville slipped in at the end.
I actually think she looks quite daring, and I’m glad to see that others agree! But I SWEAR I’ve seen that dress before, or one very much like it.
You are all crazy, that dress is perfect if for no other reason than that it has an abundance of storage! Can you imagine how difficult it must be to carry a phone, tissues, and whatever else one would need in this situation WITHOUT pockets?
Let’s face it. I don’t think any of us have an issue with your final slide mistake. It was a lovely view.
Could I see nipple in that last one with Emma? I could learn to appreciate the rest of the dress, but I’m not sure a world where Hermione shows nip is one I can handle.
Honestly? Not one picture of Emma smiling? Seriously? Not even a single one? Really?
I. LOVE. THAT. DRESS.
These pictures are from New York on Monday where it was approximately 150 degrees and 150 percent humidity. You’d look pissed too if you were wearing a burlap and taffeta sack.
I am one of the minority because I like the dress. She likes fun and edgy and it definitely suits her.
I watched the premiere live feed and she did smile (I swear! I saw it!), but for some reason she didn’t smile while they were taking those photos.
And it can’t be said enough, thank you for the Matt Lewis picture! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Minor note–can we give Tom Felton credit for cleaning up nicely too and knowing how to do a huggy group shot without stretching his jacket? Seriously, his hair looks styled, the suit looks nice, he doesn’t look like a bookie for once, no indication of “shine”, no man-jewelry. A win for the evil blond dude.
Wow, who knew Neville was so hot?! Thank you for that pic of him thrown in there. Whoever suggested he should be on Mad Men was on point.
I read in the newspaper this morning that Matt Lewis is going to be at a midnight screening tomorrow night in my city and my heart dropped into my stomach because I’M going to a midnight screening tomorrow night…but alas, he’ll be at a theater a couple miles from where I’ll be. So close, yet so far away. =*(
Dlisted said that “Emma looked like a rabid raccoon trying to scurry out of a burlap sack stuck to some opera curtains” and I have to say…I love her as much as I love any random human being I’ve never met who is also an actress playing a favorite fictional character of mine (although maybe not as much as I love Emma Thompson), but that might be apt.
@wordphreak – I ALSO think Radcliffe’s shirt looks sheer. Also that the directors do a good job of making him look as tall as Rupert and Emma in the movies when he is clearly on the short side.
I love the dress -it is funk and flattering to her perfect shape and she is wearing the heck out of it. I mean it isn’t my favorite but I love that she isn’t afraid to mix it up and have fun with it…only I wish she looked more like she was having fun!
I accidentally closed the browser tab at picture # 6. I just have to say, I LOVE Google Chrome’s “re-open closed tab” feature, else I may have missed Hot Neville!
She’s thinking “I can’t believe I’m out in public in a burlap corset all wrinkly around the middle and it’s so ITCHY I’m going to die!!!” That would make anyone cranky.
I’m probably the only one in the world who LOVES this look. I think she looks gorgeous and sexy.
My, but she does look pissed off in most of these. Or maybe it’s just her makeup (can’t say I’m a fan).
The dress is an intresting in concept, but I think I’d like it a whole lot better if:
a) the bodice part were a color other than nude (looks like her dress fell off, and that’s her spanx corset showing). Maybe chocolate? Black? I dunno, just not nude.
and
b) the bottom didn’t look like it’s dirty from being dragged across the floor all night (unless… maybe that IS dirt? In that case, somebody needs to clean that carpet)
superfug. i’d like to chop that thing off at the hips and start over.

Really? Only one other person saw Emma making those faces and thought of Posh? That’s all I can see.
I love the dress, though.
I adore this dress. That’s all I have to offer.
I am SO glad you’re fugging this. As soon as I saw it I knew you just NEEDED to.
Hideous hideous hideous. The dress; her sour expression (understandable, but still hideous); her make up… What happened to her?
After the super-awesomeness and fun that was both her grey dress and her herself a week or two ago, I thought that was what we were going to see from now on. Why, Emma? Why?
