Met Ball Fug Carpet: Elizabeth Banks

You guys. Elizabeth Banks. No. It’s a world of no. Is there any way we can blame this on a head injury? She’s spent the last six months looking GREAT and now…crackpot ahoy.

HOLY SHITFUG! I’m crying right now. I can’t handle this.

I cannot even begin to conceive what was going through the mind of the designer, the stylist, or the star.

That looks like a hurricane in the wallpaper store.

      Yes, wallpaper! That’s it exactly!

Or maybe she lost a bet.

Yep. Lost a bet in the home dec department with a designer on some really bad acid.

She seems to have relapsed into Effie Trinket mode.

Wearing one lampshade is bad enough, BUT FOUR? Girl no, you are not a lightbulb.

This dress infuriates me. I (unlike most of Fug Nation) love a peplum, and I love odd prints, and I love mixing said prints together. But this is SOOOOOO bad. I would love it with a couple of tweeks. Make the peplum succumb to gravity, and make the top capelet(?) part of the dress in a halter style – then I would want this crazy thing for myself.

You are not alone in your peplum love! Let’s start a support group. I, Eliza Bennett, am a peplumaholic. We could call it the Pep Rally.
If there was one less pattern and a bit less wombfruity flavor to the peplum from sideview, I’d be on board with this dress as if it were the Love Boat. For me it’s an Unfug, not unredeemable.

Hey if I didn’t have big ole hips, and weren’t vertically challenged, I would rock the right peplum. Maybe.

I’m with you on the odd prints….. Each print on that dress makes me happy…and mixing them makes me happy…..but then to create an ugly peplum ( btw, I like them too…but mostly because all the heroins in romance books I read when I was 14 wore them…and I didn’t know what the were, but the word seemed so sophisticated)…..and then to throw it all together without really thinking of the structure makes me sad…. I’d join the support group.

“She looks like she stuck her head through an awning, and her pelvis though an umbrella.”

ZOMG that is just an amazing description. And she DOES.

Is it just me or she really starting to look like Jane Fonda in the first picture?

    • Gina

Honestly, at first glance I thought it was an old shot of Jane Fonda. And then I saw the dress and realized not even Barbarella would wear that monstrosity.

“She looks like she stuck her head through an awning, and her pelvis though an umbrella. I mean, how concerned about rain ARE YOU?”

    so funny.

  9. Sylvia

Not even Effie would wear this. Where is Katniss with that bow and arrow to destroy this dress?

Also, Fug Ladies, I’ve heard rumblings of Tom Brady rocked a pompadour. I need you to verify this for me. Or in Kanye speak “POMPADOUR, I NEED TO KNOW SO I CAN TELL YOU I HATE IT”!!!

Not to mention she looks completely uncomfortable…there’s an element of, “yeah, I was talked into this one” going on in her expression.

Guys, she is entitled to strap on all of the easter baskets she found in the clearance aisle.

  15. Adrasteia

This is all the Capitol’s fault. Obviously she needs a better stylist as her current one is insane. Poor Effie.

  16. Gigi

I think the red mullet could have at least made me think she was in on the joke.

Aaaack! She looks like Jane Jetson got drunk and put all her best space gowns on at the same time!

  18. Fumi

I definitely think that this is a look that doesn’t really translate from the runway to the red carpet. I’m one of the few that liked this dress because I think that it’s a “Fashion” dress, but I can understand why most don’t like it.

    • Katharine
      0

Well, there are ways to do Fashion that don’t look completely ugly. See Swinton, Tilda, and Guinness, Daphne. No matter how Fashion it is, if it doesn’t suit the wearer, both her looks and personality, and work with her natural shape on some level, it will fail. As this, unfortunately, does.

  19. Jessica

But here’s the thing- it would be kind of wonderful without the peplum! She’s so close!

  20. Kit

Someone on another site said she was channelling her character from The Hunger Games. I concur – only, Elizabeth – it’s over bb!

    Freaking Katrantzou. I can’t even.

This. So much this. She is the Queen of Fashion Victims.

Just because Vogue fawned over her doesn’t make it acceptable.

Lose the cape-let and peplum, pick any two of the prints and have at it. But all this together is too much by half.

  23. Siobhán

It’s totally overwhelming her, not everyone can pull off Katrantzou. (Yes, I actually do not hate this dress, only on her.)

We need some sort of warning system for fug this fugging fug. I mean, this HURTS.

    Wow, she has smoker’s face!

  26. Ghanimatrix

Besides all the other crazy going on with this, the placement of the slit in front makes it look like it’s on backwards. In fact, I wonder if this might have looked better had she actually put it on backwards?

Left over fabric swatches, pattern pieces that were found when someone moved a storage cabinet and a six pack of Bud : never a good idea.

  28. Lisa

You know the one good thing about this dress? You wouldn’t have to suck in your stomach all night since it has it’s own built in overhang. Other than that, there is no redeeming quality that I can see.

I LOVE this. Absolutely. It’s a constructivist, schlemmeresque dress (for those interested : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ids53Ijo6P4&feature=related). What I really love about it is the beautiful, optic fabric.

    • Donna

I love it too! It’s got a lot of great elements that go well together and I appreciate the lack of clone-ness it has.

    • Erin
      0

Yay! I was worried I was the only one who loved it. It was one of the few I outright loved last night and I think it looked great on her!

  30. Softwear

I don’t hate this. The peplum is a little tooooo much in the front. But in general I love a peplum. I love the shape of the shoulders. I like these patterns and think they are working, not fighting, although of course they’re unusual. Yeah, except for the “overhang” issue, it’s pretty nice.

Here is the title for you next book, “The Caplet or the Peplum”. I think it should have been thus, preferrably the caplet as the peplum is cray cray, like a shelf – it enters a room before she does. With just the caplet this could have been very cute.

This proves that unlike the maxim No publicity is bad publicity; we can have bad attention seeking fashion and this year’s Met Ball abounded with it.

She looks like if June Cleaver was put in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.

In the first picture, I mistook the back of the woman behind her’s head for a strange brunette mullet and thought that this hair was maybe the worst that I had ever seen. So, I have to confess, the rest of the pictures were kind of a relief!

  35. cstiddy

In that first picture, I was convinced she was wearing a mantilla.

She is in a close race with Coco Rocha and Kirsten Dunst for worst dressed.

  37. Sandra

Clearly, one of her loved ones is being held hostage and the ransom demand was that she wear this mess to A Major Event. It could have been fun if she was wearing this as a joke, but it is just plain ugly.

What’s crazy is, if you look at the woman in the background of this picture, she’s wearing a less cracked out version of this dress. What’re the odds?

isn’t the Met Ball about bringing the crazy? Well, she brought the crazy! Well done, in that respect! This is spectacularly whacked out. I really kind of love that she went full tilt!

It’s truly insane. But it’s the f’ing Met Ball, if there was a ever a time to crazy-it-up big time in an insanely expensive dress this would be it!
