I think two inches shorter would have been fine. I dig the mid-length in this dress… just not exactly where it falls on her. The detail/neckline/waist/everything else is stunning. (Well, bangs a little heavy, but she looks beautiful.)

More than where the hem is, the hem itself bothers me– it looks rolled up and hasty, like it was pinned there mid-fitting. If the hem were two inches higher and more finished-looking, it’d be perfect.

This dress’s problem is alll about the hem. Not the length, the HEMMING (or lack thereof.) If “Mrs Prada picked it out..” for you, then Mrs. Prada should have made sure that the dress’s hem was sewn, NOT TAPED!!!!

(and taped BADLY, I might add.)

Also, agreed – her bangs make her look like a shaggy dog. Otherwise, gorgeous.

I love the dress, and the length, if the hem had been finished. Not taped or basted – sewn, and ironed. The lack of a crisp hemline kills it.

Other than that, this is the best dress I’ve seen her in in a loooong time.

I totally agree Ms. Wharton! ;)

Hell, just iron it and tape or staple or whatever you need to do, the ironing’s the thing.

        • Sally
          0

Word. The hem might have been sewn but if not ironed, it will look like crap. Pin, iron, THEN stitch said Mom. It will always look crisp.

My biggest issue was how sloppy the hem looks. The length is awkward, yes, but it looks like she hemmed it with Scotch tape. BAD.

Hem, horrible. Yes. But the HAIR HELMET. The hair helmet vexes me.

I like it from the waist to the neck. I have a hard time with Biel for the simple fact I do not like her. I find her whiny and all Woe-is-me so it probably wouldn’t matter what she showed up in, I wouldn’t like it.

    • Donna
      0

I’m joining you in the “she annoys me so much she could be the actual tooth fairy and I still wouldn’t like her” camp. Also, that hem. Can these people not iron?

  6. Karen

Count me in on the hemline issue: it looks like it was shortened hastily without getting pressed. So tacky. It turned the post into a Scrolldown Fug for me.

I’m not sure I would even have had a problem with the length if the hem hadn’t been so distracting.

The top is stunning, though, and it’s nice to see she’s given up those high-necked monstrosities she’s been trotting out lately. And the earrings are gorge.

    But that hair! Oh HONEY.

  7. Softwear

I don’t have a problem with where the hemline hits her. She’s got the legs to carry this length off. It’s the messiness of the hemming job that I hate. I hate that look. It’s ruining this otherwise gorgeous dress, much like her bangs are ruining her otherwise gorgeous face. Oh and the view from the back? Is fine. Yep, it’s a smidge tight, but it’s sexy. So don’t mess with it.

Love the dress, shoes, earrings and clutch. Hate the hem, hair and make-up.

Too bad about the hem and the fit, because this had the potential to look really wonderful.

  10. Billie

I’m with everyone else, that hem is awful.

And those bangs drive me crazy! I like the casual beachy waves she usually wears. I keep wanting to blink those freaking bangs out of her eyes!

  11. eee

In the small photo I thought “What could be wrong with that dress? It looks lovely.” Then I opened the big version, saw the hem, and went “Oh.”

“Oh” pretty well sums it up. Agreed with everyone else about the hem ruining it all.

I feel as if I need to be a touch ironic – in a newly graduated, early twenty-something, exceedingly liberal sort of way – to comment, but I just have to disagree. Although that comment was probably as insufferable as any… This is not the American high street, four inches longer or shorter would absolutely ruin this dress.

That dress is not flattering at all. The bangs are also not flattering. Those earrings are fabulous though!

I just can’t get past her head.

This look is hideous from the hair and makeup to the awful dress.I don’t know how much of a career she has left but this look ought to finish it off.

  16. Beth

I can’t tell if she’s giving face in the first pic or the photographer just caught her trying to see through her bangs screen.

  17. Sarah Williams

I’m fine with the dress, but she needs some makeup, and those bangs look like they are eating her face.

  18. BrownEyedBetty

My first issue is the color of the dress….doesn’t seem right for her skin-tone. Plus the fabric is a bit boring. Yes, the hem is weird. Her hair is too damn dark and too damn close to her eyes. Her make up has washed her out. She’s a pretty girl with a nice figure. Why is it so hard for her to knock it out of the park??

  19. Linda
    0

The hem is something Nina Garcia and Michael Kors would severally attack a designer for on Project Runway and then shake their heads and make stern, disapproving faces for several minutes.
Aside from that and the bangs, I like it.

  20. Cristina Cartagena

Not to mention who sewed this hem a preschooler?

  21. Elena

Agree that the hem is awful, I also hate the bangs… and the shoes with that outfit. It’s not a 100% fug, but only because she is so pretty.

  22. jen
    0

I’m not sure about the shoes. They are too dark to match (not that I wanted her to be matchy matchy), too shiny to be nude, too heavy to be non-descript. They seem to be “oh hell, these will be fine.”

  23. LawyaGal

Badly taped hem + strange length = stump city. I think the overwhelming hair is stumpifying as well. She is super gorgeous and has one of the best bodies in Hollywood. This is fashion Oscars – I think she can do way better.

  24. schadenfreudelicious

The bangs are not flattering, and the hem looks like someone made a feeble attempt to tack it up with scotch tape before pushing her out of the limo….

  25. julie
    0

Agree on the hemline — but biggest issue for me is that she has been looking frumpy even in the nicest of outfits lately. It’s like she doesn’t even care that she’s out for a big fancy evening — I think she’d rather be home watching it online with a bag of chips on one side and justin on the other. Please Jess, try to look like you want to be there.

  26. Pamela in Calgary
    0

First off, she needs to lose the bangs…this hairstyle is doing nothing for her. I do like the colour, but the style has got to be changed.

Secondly, it’s nice that someone made her a special dress, but they obviously don’t like her – it’s certainly not the most flattering outfit I’ve ever seen. I do love the colour/pattern, and the neckline, but it bunches weirdly around the belt and that hem is the most amateur looking thing I’ve ever seen…even I could do a better job, hand-sewing.

I think Jessica is a beautiful woman, but she’s also her own worst enemy. She needs to align herself with a stylist who likes her and who “gets” her, if she wants to reach her full potential.

ps: who else believes that if this marriage even happens, it lasts less than 5 years?

    • thunderthighs
      0

I can’t imagine that it’ll actually happen. He seems so not into it, and she seems so bummed out.

Agreed on the worst enemy. There are magazine editorials where I’ve seen her look incredible. She’s gorgeous and has one of the most booming bodies in the biz, and yet she’s always fuggin’ it up.

  27. Heidi
    0

She may have a pretty face, but not near pretty enough to *not* wear makeup to this kind of event. Is it just me or did she just all of the sudden decide to stop wearing makeup altogether? This look is okay for yoga class, but even a little lipstick and blush would go along way.

    • Stephanie
      0

I totally agree. I think if she had worn a red lip and had some life in her face, it would go a long way here.

  28. M.Amanda
    0

    Several issues:
    1. The bangs are awful.
    2. The hem looks like it was hastily pinned just before the event, which makes no sense since,
    3. The length is not flattering.
    4. As gorgeous as the earrings are, I don’t like them with this dress, so I guess she gets a pass for just letting the non-bang portion of her hair hang.

I think if she wore her hair in soft waves with no bangs, and the skirt stopped just above the knees, she’d look perfect for almost any party that is less fancy and fashion-centric than the Met Ball.

    My apologies, Mrs. Prada.

  29. mva

Lets start at the top and move down. Her hair is terrible. Please lose the fringe right now. It is doing nothing for her and weighs down her features.
Her lips have been plumped too much – lay off and look a bit more natural.
Put on some lipstick with some colour please. Behind the hair and the nude lips I can’t see her at all.
The dress is not pretty nor flattering nor original. Almost reminds me of a bridal gown.
Its clearly too tight around her hips – even when she is standing up. Imagine what it was like when she sat down. They made it sound like it had been made specifically for her, if that was the case then it should have fit better and been the proper length as well.
The hem is poorly done (taped as some people are suggesting or pinned perhaps) is not acceptable at an affair like this. And the length is wrong. Shorter or longer but not this.
Gets my vote for one of the worst dressed of the night. Imagine how that makes Justin Timberlake feel – he lives to be adored these days and this will reflect badly on him.
On a personal note – I don’t like the ring either.

body: slammin as always, dress: gorgeous and elegent, I think (sans hem job). But hair? girl, with those bangs you are reminiscent of no one so much as Chrissie Hynde, and, while I love the woman, let’s leave the signature look to her and let the world look at your pretty, pretty face, no? /gramma rant

cannot add anything to this that everyone hasn’t already said. I do not understand why she continues to look like crud no matter who she is wearing. washed out, blah.

although I could get by with those earrings.

Biel apparently posted the original sketch: http://www.peoplestylewatch.com/people/stylewatch/gallery/0,,20593900_4,00.html

And it looks like to me that the original thought was full length….would have been better.

is it just me or has she taken to wearing a lot of white since she got engaged?

  35. erambo

Ack, the hem!!! the shoes!!! The bangs!!!! The dress is gorgeous, the hem is a disaster, the shoes are revolting and the bangs just plain suck.

  36. bmj

I agree with some of the readers above. I think the whole thing is fantastic –including the hem and the butt and the bangs—but the sloppiness of the hemline bugs me.

  37. Amber
    0

First of all, GET YOUR HAIR OUT OF YOUR FACE!!! Sorry for being capsy, but good lord. A face like that and she hides under all that hair?? I think the hair would just about ruin any dress or outfit, period.
I agree with others that it’s the wonkiness of the hem, more than the length, that makes it look so bad. I could do better than that and I can barely sew on a button.
I also have to admit that I am not a big fan of Biel. I think I would like her 100x better if she got rid of Timberlake, so maybe it’s not her I have the issue with…
That being said, the dress is beautiful, with a few touch-ups. Same can be said for Biel herself.

  38. Rebecca
    0

Ack, why does it look like she has absolutely no makeup on at all in that first picture (including eye makeup)?! I’m not saying she should go the way of Taylor Momsen raccoon eyes, but this is the MET BALL, put on some false lashes and eyeliner for crying out loud.

  39. Amanda
    0

Is she even wearing makeup? I mean I get the natural look, but that usually doesn’t mean “leave bags under her eyes so big she could carry a poodle int them” – at least not in my world. Oh, and I agree with everyone else about the length and the hem. They butcher what is an otherwise lovely dress that I very much wish that I owned.

  40. S
    0

Her hair looks like it is swallowing her face. Her makeup is so bland, all I can see is hair. And I agree about the hem – very sloppy and ruins an otherwise gorgeous though slightly too tight in the behind dress.

  41. Crystal
    0

The whole outfit feels like a haphazard afterthought…just everything about it is sloppy. The appliques look superglued on, and those SHOES. The most unhappy bridesmaids shoes I’ve ever seen.

  42. Leah

Seriously what is up with her butt? It’s like two feet of crack up in there.

I think Jessica has a lovely face, so I hate her bangs with a white-hot passion. I could maybe get behind something wispy, but those bangs are ridiculously heavy and way too long.

As for what she’s wearing: It’s gotten to the point now where I just skim over her clothing choices because I’m obsessed with her absolutely horrible taste in shoes.

  45. Aria
    0

Hem – badly sewed, glued, stapled, whatever. Can’t even focus on the length because of that. and just a smidge too tight in the back.
Hair – definitely needed fewer bangs and I would’ve like to seen wavy but pinned up/back. And I think she could use a slightly stronger lip – not a red necesssarily, just a little less nude.

    Like the shoes and earrings

  46. Jennifer
    0

Yawn. I don’t like the length — or the sloppy hem job — or the bangs or the no-makeup look or the bag or the print or the heavy shoes with that length. In short, it’s a very classy-looking mess.

  47. Meghan

i agree that the hem is horrible! and People is showing sketches that show it full-length–why didn’t she keep it that way?? it would have been so much better!

    Jessica. Have a seat.

Oh, you can’t. I see that. So that’s thing one, but can we please talk about the hair? The ‘do is not supposed to act as the Witness Protection Program for the face, dear. It doesn’t really matter what you hang off your ears if people can’t see YOU.

Here’s what I think you should do. Give back the ring. Tell him that it’s not you, it’s him. Then treat yourself to a nice vacation, with beaches and cocktails and cabana boys. Don’t come back till you feel better.

Ready? Want a hug? There you go. <3

I wasn’t so rattled by the length on this dress, but the fact that I could’ve executed the same hem with masking tape. Hello, tailoring? The hair is just depressing. What a mess of a beautiful girl.

I love love love the dress but that is a Project Runway hem that landed in the bottom two if I ever saw one. And the bangs are today’s reminder to me that I don’t need to cut bangs again just yet.

  54. elle
    0

Agree the hem is off, butt’s too tight, also IMO it’s an inch and a half too low cut. The way she’s peeking out from under the heavy bangs gives the impression of a dutiful child who doesn’t think for herself.

She looked stunning every time back in the day before hooking up with JT and becoming her shadow. I agree this is way better than her usual lackluster outfits up to date. I guess the dress was originally long, and was (poorly, poorly) hemmed very last minute for the sake of showing off those beautiful shoes. I hate the matchy-matchy green dress ornaments-green earrings- green clutch (all in the same shade). I would have kept the earrings, which are fabu; but I would have gone for a red clutch and maybe red shoes. The poodle bangs hide most of her gorgeous face, and she should have gone easier on the hair straightener.

  64. Cgirl

I am willing to overlook the bangs and the length (which doesn’t bother me that much anyway) because I think this is by far the best she’s looked in ages.

ARGGGHHHHH!!!!! WHEN ARE PEOPLE GOING TO GET THE MEMO ABOUT HOW BANGS THAT CURVE THAT WAY NEVER FLATTER?! A FEW PEOPLE CAN “GET AWAY” WITH THESE BANGS, MEANING, THEY STILL MANAGE TO LOOK CUTE (but, they could look better…). AND ALL THESE PEOPLE HAPPEN TO BE SMALL CHILDREN AND OTHER PEOPLE WITH SHORT, WIDE FACES (And big eyes. And short noses. And a short upper lip).
You, Jessica Biel, do NOT have a short face. But, so what, you have another kind prettiness. WHY ARE YOU MESSING UP THE PRETTY YOU’VE GOT?!
(I need to lay down for a bit.)

  66. Mo

Just like the others, the hair and the hem –Blargh! But the dress itself is quite pretty.

  67. Kara

Jessica Biel bugs me. She has said she’s too beautiful to get roles, but the issue is she’s just not a good actress and never has been. Like if I were a struggling actress with actual talent but just hadn’t gotten “my big break,” she would infuriate,/b> me, because she’s just … not good at acting. Also her marriage is not going to happen, and if it does, it’s not going to last – Justin Timberlake does not seem like the marrying kind.

ANYWAY. Agreed about the hem – Nina Garcia would rip that hem to shreds if it showed up on Project Runway. And the bangs don’t work, and she needs color on her lips – she looks … camouflaged, kind of – hidden by the hair and bare-looking face.

  68. Lion
    0

I don’t like it at all. Yes, must give reasons… Maybe because it looks like someone chose it for her (Mucia Prada – ha!) and it just doesn’t work, she doesn’t seem to be able to carry it at all.

  69. Jennifer E.
    0

the hair is an absolute fail.

the dress looks like it is on backwards. the V is awkward. the rear view looks like it would be better on the front, too.

    the hem doesn’t need mentioning.

and girlfriend needs a BIG dose of self-esteem. she is NOT all that pretty, so that’s not why she doesn’t get jobs. she needs a new career. and trailing JT around and being grateful for the crumbs he throws her way is NOT a good choice.

SHE needs to dump HIM; this makes her appear to have grown up. then do something else with her life. reality shows would be an improvement at this rate.

i’m not a hater but there is just no love here. i wish there were.
