Oscars Well Played: Diane Kruger and Pacey

well-played

I love this look so much. It might honestly be my favorite look of the night. Even if you remove Pacey from the equation (NOT THAT WE’D EVER).

I know this sounds hateful but I actually really love Diane (I can’t not watch a National Treasure movie if it’s on TV)… but it’s nice to know that despite the fact that she always looks absolutely PERFECT, she has a little bit of the man hands thing going on. Maybe it was just the lighting or the way she was clutching that purse, but I can finally see now that she’s HUMAN. I love her even more now.

She sure has nice feet though (unlike lots of celebs). They don’t look like they’ve been marred by constant high-heel wearing yet.

Dicey looks perfect! Also, watch her in some other films… She was absolutely billiant in Inglourious Basterds, and Farewell, My Queen was truly beautiful and underrated (it was relegated to being an art film because it was in French!).

I actually don’t like this dress, but (like with J Law’s dress), I respect it. It’s a statement and it’s a very Kruger statement at that, so good on her.

However, I cannot get behind shoes that contain clear plastic, no matter how little there is.

This dress looks like it has a herd of buffalo on it AND I LOVE IT.

I thought exactly the same thing!

I don’t love it, but yeah, all I can see is a tiny herd of buffalo thundering across her dress, hopefully carrying a bunch of tiny razors TO SHAVE THE FREAKING SCRUFF OFF PACEY’S FACE GOOD HEAVENS MAN YOU ARE WEARING A TUXEDO *hyperventilates*

The dress is spectacular, and she’s even pulling off a white manicure. They look glorious.

I’m assuming, GFY Jessica, that your shoes, while sadly not Louboutins, are happily not a half-size too big.

    • Franziska
      +2

I wondered about that, too. All the ladies’ shoes seem to be too big for their feet. How do they walk in them?

  5. Elle

I don’t know why she’s wearing an animal print awning over her backside but doubtless she has her reasons.

I would like to see this without the cape. But whatever. These two make me believe in love. Stay together forever kids!

She’s in that category of gorgeous where I lose all objectivity and think everything she wears is great. (see also, Kerry Washington, Zoe Saldana)

She’s so good. And those Loubs are just perfect with the dress. Viva Kruger!

I remember why I stopped reading GFY for years. It’s because of this bias you Fug Girls have towards certain celebrities, so that whatever they wear, you love it. Diane Kruger is probably the worst favourite.
And obviously you are completely entitled to like whomever you like. I’m not trying to tell you how to write your blog. I’m just trying to give honest feedback, because for me as a reader, it makes it boring to read some of your stuff.
I have nothing against Diane Kruger. And I have nothing against you Girls or you having personal opinions. And hey – maybe I’m wrong. I admit that’s a very possible prospect.

But I mean – that dress is hideous. The pattern is WAY too busy with the sleeves and the cape. You can’t even tell where her arms and waist are! She looks like a big black-and-white blob.
If there was no cape, or the cape didn’t have that pattern, or some other part of the dress didn’t have that pattern, or for Christ’s sake if there was even a belt of some kind, it would probably look okay. But as it is, she’s lost in the pattern and all that fabric. I’d like to see some other outline than just that of the cape and then her (gorgeous) legs.

Also, the shoes looked good from afar, but see-through plastic makes everything feel cheap and tasteless. And it’s bothering me that the shoes look too big. I’m just imagining how uncomfortable and difficult walking must be!

But the thing is… you CAN’T separate the dress from the wearer. That’s the whole point! Every dress has its context, and part of its context is the body it’s on. Also, every site has biases — it’s impossible not to — but I think we freely admit ours and also make ample room for people to discuss their alternate opinions in the comments. I have to defend our right to think certain people have a gift with pulling off clothes other people can’t. It’s just… what we think, and this is an opinion site. We are sorry to lose you over that, but I hope you understand where we’re coming from.

That dress is PERFECTION and so is she. I die. I’ve missed her! She IS fashion. Go Di-K!!

        +3

i have to agree with both comments – the fact that she is la kruger does not mitigate the obscenity that is this dress. and i don’t have to agree with the fug girls at all times in order to love them. <3

I think this is a definitely a case of being biased. This dress is A W F U L !!!!! I thought you were joking when you put that this was your favorite look.

This makes Kruger resemble, simultaneously, a whale, and something that a lion would attack on the veldt. The plastic-y shoes are painfully tacky. And why is her hair done in Every Six-Year-Old’s Ballet Recital Ever? Is that to match the length of this… garment?

It’s terrible, and the Wite-Out on her nails isn’t helping.

    • Jessica

I legitimately love it. I would love it on someone I disliked, as well. You are free to disagree with me, obviously. But this has nothing to do with whether I like her or not. I would have liked this on Giuliana Rancic.

        +1

I like it… what would make me love it is if the skirt was like 1950′s length and the cape was shorter… that would be the ballpark hit for me.

Taste is subjective. I kind of love it too, but would worry about sitting down and having too much of the back skirt billow up and show off my undies. But the black and white print is stunning as is the unusual shape and proportions – at least in standing position! And that is definitely the right hairdo with something that visually impactful on the body.

I love the print, but hate the shape. That would be pretty as either a fitted mini or a tailored gown.

Yeah, I’m not loving this. I saw other pictures of it and she just looked like a misshapen blob, which we all know she is NOT. I thought it would get a Fug for sure.

What? Am I living in Bizarroland? This thing is HIDEOUS; she looks like Wilma Flintsone on a bender.

    • Mariela
      +7

“Wilma Flintstone on a bender”. YES.

I was thinking more “didn’t take the cape off once they finished cutting her hair”, but your description is perfect.

And this dress is ridiculously underwhelming.

Look at her feet! Even they are perfect- now I am convinced she is not human- alien or robot? I’m not sure.

Diane Kruger is a fashion girl, and this is Fashion with a capital F. I think she looks absolutely stunning. It’s voluminous while still flattering her great legs and tiny waist, the pattern is unusual but elegant (animal print mated with houndstooth), and the shoes are to. Die. For. I hate plastic footwear as much as the next person, but this is tastefully, beautifully done.

I also think the accusations of undue favoritism on the Fug Girls’ part are unfair and really, really silly. There are some people fortunate enough to be able to pull off wackadoo stuff, and Kruger is one of them. (See also: Blanchett, Cate; SWINTON; Saldana, Zoe; etc.) Don’t like a little fashionista fawning? Watch Fashion Police.

I agree that it’s not bias, but rather a reflection of the fact that there are a handful of celebs who can and do go where fashion angels fear to tread. That having been said, just because Diane is undoubtedly one of those celebs doesn’t mean she never makes a misstep. This look is unflattering, and, as Jules says above, blobby.

    • Guerra

Obsessed with this dress! I just started my second trimester and I’d love to wear this dress to an occasion… it’s so glamorous and forgiving! (well, forgiving if you are a) super skinny or b) pregnant).
    Gorgeous.

I applaud Kruger for her interesting fashion choices but I can’t get behind this one totally: the proportions seem off. I don’t think the cape works on a dress this short. I do LOVE the print, though.

I sky-blue polish is the icing on the cake. It would have been so obvious to go red, or even stay neutral, but blue!

I loved it too! It’s weird and retro and futuristic all at the same time.

  23. Morgan R.

DK is one of those people who can pull off looks mere mortals such as we could never dream of. The print is eccentric, the cut is weird, the shoes are too big and have clear plastic, AND YET she looks glam, composed, and impeccably accessorized. Honestly I love that there are celebs out there doing different things; even if it doesn’t always work, I am at least not bored to death by another sedately-colored mermaid gown. Anyone can do safe.

I never ever watched Dawson’s Creek – I know Josh Jackson from Fringe – but thanks to you girls (and I mean that) I ALWAYS refer to him as Pacey! Even my husband calls him Pacey!

    • Carrie
      +1

For a long time, I though his name was Pacey. “Oh yeah, Diane Kruger, so gorgeous… she’s together with some actor whose name is Pacey I guess?”

Every time misogynistic commenters online say– regarding comments about female celebrities– “You shouldn’t say anything because you’re just jealous. You just irrationally hate her because she is far, far more beautiful than you’ll ever be,” I think about Diane Kruger and Amanda Seyfried. I don’t know why, but I absolutely adore them and am willing to forgive even their most horrible outfit choices. For no real reason, I can’t stand Anne Hathaway and hate pretty much everything she wears.

      I really like this.

    • Heather S.

Same here. He looks taller and thinner with DK than he did on Fringe.

  25. TonyG

Put me in the “no like-y” camp. It seems like there’s too much animal print on this animal print dress, and the cape does nothing for the look. Also, is it me, or is the waist too high?

  26. Cat
    +3

While I’m not a big fan of capes, I think I like this and Diane can certainly work it. In fact, she’s probably one of the few people on earth who can pull this off, which probably does help me like it. It’d be awesome to see a retail version of this dress without the cape, because I think a lot of people would snatch it up.

  27. Gretchen

I probably wouldn’t like this as much if everyone else at the Oscars were not so boring. I was pretty underwhelmed with Oscar fashion this year. Kudos to Diane for wearing something interesting and aesthetically pleasing.

Without the cape I might love this. With the cape it just looks oddly shaped. The cape being longer than the dress isn’t helping.

  31. buttercup

I’m surprised at how divisive this is! I’m in the AMAZING camp. There isn’t a thing I would change. The whole look is exquisite: hair (not always the case with Kruger), make-up, jewelry, manicure, dress, shoes, man-accessory.

I’m confused about one thing. Everyone keeps saying it’s roomy or generously cut? It looks nipped in at the waist to me. I feel like the cape behind it is obscuring that though?

  32. witjunkie

I loved it in the first pic, but not so much the second. However, among all the eye-opening things DK has worn, I put this in the Whoa, Cool column, vs Good God, What is That.

Here is a video of Diane in the dress – you can’t really see but there is one moment where you can see it full length. It seems much more light and airy than it looks in these photos. Maybe you will change your mind.

I have to say the video does put a new spin on the dress. Now it’s very Audrey Hepburn rather than hi-lo muumuu with petticoats.

Lovely lady but the dalmatian capey dress is a fail in my eyes. Just because rashion tells us to where these unflattering rags to boost their sales doesn’t mean we have to do it. It seems more sheeplike to follow ‘high fashion’ and choose ‘daring’ dresses that a civilian couldn’t pul off. No-one can pull off crap!

Jessica, I hope you get the dress, and the shoes, and the jewels, and the bag, and all the things you want. I just ask that you leave me Pacey.

Serious opinion, I don’t think I’m good with judging the “edgy” fashion choices – so my only real criticism comes from when I think something is terribly unflattering. I think this dress is odd, but SHE looks good – so for me, it’s a success.

  37. Nancy
