SAG Awards Fug Carpet: Rose Byrne

For a ssecond I thought I liked the bob on Rose Byrne; then I decided it might be too heavy for her face. But then, my best friend when I was five had essentially this haircut — or else, she did in my fuzzy memories of that age — so I think my residual fondness (even though she once dotted my skin with green permanent marker, which she may have thought was helping my appearance, and which may have been correct) is pushing this into the win column for me.

And when I saw this, I was like, “Oh, Rose Byrne’s dress might be really nice. I can’t wait to see the rest of it.”

Rose. ROSE. A pleated-pants jumpsuit by any other name still looks like you lost a bet to the Flying Elvises. The joke may be on you, so I’m glad you’re at least enjoying it.

she looks like a human wishbone

    • Ronni

This is my favorite comment, ever, on the entire Internet.

      • Bubba

        Ditto Ronni.

If this were a straight column down to the floor, how lovely would it have been. Also, didn’t she look much curvier in Bridesmaids? This makes me sad.

  2. Kit

No to the hair and no to the jumpsuit. I can’t believe this is the same elegant beauty from Bridesmaids!

  3. Alix

    The bangs look fake.

  4. Bex

The bangs just may be fake. I saw a show about adding them, kind of like extensions. This whole outfit is just UGLY.

  5. Stefanie

She kinda reminds me of the lady in Hot in Cleavland. Whats her name? I have no idea. She was also in Just Shoot Me. And that lady is a very attractive lady, she is probably old enough to be Rose’s mom.

  6. Faye

Oh Rose, Rose, Rose (sigh). You are blessed with such naturally beautiful hair — the kind of hair the rest of us (or at least me) have to spend a lot of money and time to acheive. Why do you insist on butchering it in so many ways? Those bangs are a crime against humanity. Remember how lovely Rose’s hair was in, say, Seasons 1 and 2 of Damages, and even in Bridesmaids? Yeah, I miss that too.

As for that jumpsuit: if you’re channeling John Travolta circa “Saturday Night Fever” as your fashion inspiration, you’ve taken a very sharp turn in the wrong direction.

  7. theotherjennifer

@Stefanie – Wendy Malik is who you’re thinking of. Those bangs are icky. Celine Dion would totally wear that jumpsuit on stage in Vegas.

  8. Adriana

I think it’s fun, or at least she’s selling it for me.

  9. Willow

this tweet I saw last night says more than enough:

“ROSE BYRNE GLITZY WTF WHITE JUMPSUIT EXTRAVAGANZA I AM DEAD PLEASE DO NOT REVIVE THE HORROR THE HORROR”

  10. Feena

I love this! It’s glamorous and funky and she’s right, it totally does evoke memories of Pfeiffer in Scarface. Can we at least be thankful it’s not one-shoulder or mermaid hem or neutral toned or swamped in tulle? Thankssomuch.

    • Lizaster

I’m with you. I weirdly like this!!

      • Andrea

Love this…it’s funky and cool and she looks happy to be wearing it, and maybe a bit like she actually chose it for herself.

  11. Gigi

Her posture in that first photo is horrible!!! It’s like even she knows it’s a bad Anna Wintour rug in an even worse Celine Dion jumpsuit.

    • anny

First shot posture, makeup and smirk made me think “Nancy Reagan”. I don’t know why.

[Insert "just say no" joke here]

  12. Orange clouds

I kinda love it, in an ironic way.

    • Annie E

Me too! I think the outfit is great, but I don’t like the hair. It doesn’t work with her face.

  13. lori

I about died when she said, “I love a jumpsuit.” Girl. No.

  14. Jenn

I agree with the few dissenting comments – I like it – I don’t know why but I think it is, well refreshing and quirky in an non Piper Perabo kind of way

  15. Amber

I don’t hate it, either. I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it. And that 2nd picture is cracking me up.

  16. Tessa

I love the hair. Not many people can pull off the whole Julie Christie/Shampoo thing and I think she is doing so. Remember how cute Katie Holmes looked with this hair? Sigh. If Taylor Swift has a brain in her head, she’ll keep the bangs for a while too. I know bangs are evil and the product of Satan and all, but they do suit some people and make that hideous growing them in period totally worth it.

  17. TonyG

I did not hate, this until Heather made the Elvis Presley reference, and, now that is what I see, an Elvis jumpsuit — (and I do not hate jumpsuits as a matter of principal) — prettied up a bit, but an ode to Elvis nonetheless.

  18. Anne B

Yup, that’s the hair my kid had when she was five. She has a much longer version now. I think she’s had this look (“BANG! You’re in preschool”) in one iteration or another for as long as she’s had hair.

It’s also the very same haircut of a beautiful little kid I met yesterday. She was shopping with her mom, had just gotten her hair cut, and was telling everyone who’d listen about it. “I just got all my hair cut off!”

I have to say, that haircut totally goes with the sexy-Elvis suit. Which doesn’t make it good, but does make it somehow less of a hound dog.

  19. Miz H

The pantsuit is bad. Elvis indeed. But what bugs me the most in the hem. It’s too damn long. Feet are not your enemy starlets!

  20. Miss Louise

Another dissenter … I think she looks fantastic, and the things I love here is that Rose looks like she’s loving how she looks. Usually she’s getting dinged by H and J for not smiling enough, so it’s delightful to see her looking so happy and self-assured rather than anxious. I love the hair, though I agree maybe the fringe could have been a bit less heavy, and I think she’s rocking that jumpsuit – it’s so Faye Dunaway seventies cocktail hour. There are days when I feel that the band of what’s deemed acceptable on this site is gradually narrowing. I don’t share the in-principle rejection of either fringes, which genuinely suit some people, or of jumpsuits, which can be funky and a bit camp. She looks elegant but fun. Go Rose!

    • Fiona

Here, here! There are options other than knee-length cocktail dresses with peep-toe Louboutins!

    • themis

I don’t love, but she looks happy, and I agree with those of us saying — at least she wore something different. I am starting to get really tired of half-sheer and grecian columns and draping and *snore. . . *

  21. Saz

I like it! I don’t like jumpsuits, but this is cute on her. I think it’s the fabric. And the fact that she looks like she’s having fun. :D

  22. BeeDreams

Yeah, I’m on the positive spectrum. I like it, she looks good guys!

  23. Amy

    You choose a bad picture.
She looks cute and different to all the cloned bunnys.

Maybe a dress would have been save, but also boring.
So please give up your US Elvis Trauma and relax. :)

  24. Sajorina

That’s the same haircut my mom had when she was 4 years old in 1950… I have pictures! I think this would’ve been a success if it had been a dress! She looks good from the waist up and her accessories are nice! From the waist down… Yup, female Elvis!

  25. oohsparkley

I almost liked it – until I noticed the droopy crotch and that’s uncomfortable, of course you probably could sit down or bend over if the crotch was where it’s supposed to be, unless it’s stretchy.

    • anny

I noticed that too. Either that rise is way too long or she’s got the shortest femurs in show biz.

  26. steen

I really don’t mind the jump suit on her at all. It’s just the hair is all wrong. I think it should be pulled back and off her face and wowsa.

  27. Lina

Oy. I’m not a fan of the pageboy haircut at all — except perhaps on actual pageboys in historical costume dramas. There’s so much angularity here: bangs, shoulderpads, deep v-neck, angled sash, belt, pants creases, stiff hem, and she’s become so thin in the last couple of years that I don’t think this style flatters her at all. If she were curvier, the angularity of the styling and jumpsuit would be an interesting contrast, but *she’s* so angular that a softer outfit would go much, much further.

  28. katalata

she looks adorable, the end. she went for a look and nailed it, she makes me think I could nail that look too (though i CANT… must.. not…chop…crazy bangs…must not)

  29. Sophia Loren

Wendie Malik is brilliant and I love the jumpsuit.

  30. vandalfan

I could like this jumpsuit, with hair Up, and for a different occasion, like putting one’s imprints in the sidewalk at Grauman’s Chinese Theater.

  31. Chaser

    Love. My fave.

  32. L

oh no! i don’t even know how to say this…. when i saw the second picture it reminded me of lambchop. but somehow thru the fact that she’s pretty plus my 90s nostalgia love of lambchop, it doesn’t bother me that much.

  33. Laura

HATE the hair, and I always hate a jumpsuit. Also, her head looks superimposed on her body in the shot on People. Like, her head looks crazy big for her body, and that horrible hair isn’t helping. Please be a wig?

  34. VanDee

    Oh. Dear. God.

  35. Kelly O

And how is she on so many Best Dressed lists? Seriously. The idea of this is lovely but y’all it’s a jumpsuit. There is an old saying about how you cannot make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, and you cannot make a lovely dress out of a jumpsuit. I mean, if you are maybe five (which would totally go with the haircut, so maybe THAT’S the angle we’re shooting for here – World’s Most Glamorous Five Year Old – is Rose Byrne a Toddlers & Tiaras fan? That’s got to be it.)

  36. Mahastee

Is there a reason we don’t get to see a decent full-length photo of this? It is hard to comment on objectively, but it does seem that the crotch is sitting a little low(?)

Anyway, I loved the choppy crop she had back in the 90′s (a touch longer than the classic Halle crop). It was beautiful with her delicate features. This bob, not so much.

  37. Gigi

OH NO! I LOVE it – hate the the hair though. WAY too heavy for such a lovely delicate girl :)

  38. Bambi Anne Dear

With more flesh I think she’d look great in this.

  39. lc

I came of age in the 70′s, and I rocked many a jumpsuit in the day if I say so myself. Growing up pants were verboten for women in many settings, I think when I started school we were only allowed to wear them under our dresses on very cold days. So I embraced the pant in all forms when I could and I still do. I would much rather wear a pant than a skirt. I find it a little sad so many are frowning on them now, freedom ladies, don’t let it go! And I think Rose looks great in the jumpsuit!

  40. Oona

MADNESS… Rose is killer. She is MONEY in this onesie. Long live The King.

  41. dwinks

Am I missing something? Elvis is the King after all. Rock it Rose, rock it. Way to think outside the box (and yes that is a pun for vagina).

  42. djr

she makes anna wintour look fat!

  43. Caroline

True. She looks anorexic anna wintour.
