This probably would have been a Well Played, had she just chopped off her legs at the ankles and trotted around like a double peg-legged pirate. What, you think I’m exaggerating? Maybe. But the shoes she chose were the footwear equivalent of bloody stumps, to me, and it derailed this whole train. Like Dementors attacking the Hogwarts Express, but less chilly and with fewer hoodies.

The shoes are a mistake, you’re right about that. From their stumpy platform plinths to their Dyeables red bridesmaid satin. The dress, however, is greater than it looks: maybe it’s like other Valentinos in that it’s all about the way it’s cut to move on the body.
Those shoes are a tragedy.
Get to Viola Davis, get to Viola Davis!!!!!
THe shoes were also bad in that she couldn’t really walk very well in the dress/shoe combo. The dress kept wrapping up around her ankles.
That red dress is by far the nicest thing I’ve ever seen her wear. It’s a colour! It’s not twee! She has a collarbone! I don’t even hate the shoes (I’m not condoning them, I just don’t have a visceral hatred of them). But her hair still derails everything for me. Speaking as a girl with a similarly round face, that length does not look Carey Mulligan Pixie Cute on her, it just creates frog-face.
I agree with the hair comment–her face is very round, and this cut makes her head look bulbous. Though “frog-face” is a catchier way of saying it, good job.
I don’t hate the shoes, but they’re boring and predictable. But I totally agree the dress would have been SO much better floor length with a bit of a train.
I just realized that the second vote may have been for Busy Phillips rather than Michelle Williams’ second dress – in which case I change my vote from “Yeahhhhhhh?!” to “Yikes!”
Me, too.
I thought it was for Busy Phillips and voted “yikes,” then realized it was probably for Michelle’s second dress. Oops. I guess we cancel each other out.
Is Busy Phillips actually a man?
Considering she gave birth to a baby, I doubt it.
Did Michelle Williams call up Busy and be like ‘Hey Bus, let’s head to a yoga retreat upstate, pick you up in 5′ and then when she got in the car she was like ‘BAZINGA, we’re off to the SAGs’
Favorite comment of the day. Bravo.
Yeah those shoes are horrible… I’m not sure I like the hem of the red dress either, seems like it was hard to walk in.
I really like the black, I’m probably in the minority
But her hair! Her current shade of blonde is glorious. I really think she rocks the short hair unlike Carey Mulligan. And she seemed happy at the ceremony. I love how relaxed Busy is. Granted, she would have looked more matchy with Zoe, but I also love that they aren’t competing. Plus I love Busy’s hair.
Love the hair, too! Color and cut look great on her. I’m focusing on that and not the shoes.
I don’t like the hem or the shoes or the lace. But I am happy to see her wearing color.
(Does this make her look a little wide in the mid-section? eek.)
I think it’s just the angle of that photo. I thought she looked a little wide, too, but when I went through the slide show the second shot of the dress looks much better, waist-wise. Nothing is saving the matchy/awful shoes, though – eugh!
I don’t know – I wanted to like it, even ignoring the shoes, but in the end I’m just bored. It fits her well, it’s her kind of cut, but…eh.
She needs to channel La Mirren. She’s pretty and clothes fit her nicely, but she’s not selling it, she doesn’t believe in it, she ain’t owning it.
It looked miles better on TV, but then she was standing in front of the podium and I didn’t see those godawful shoes. The dress did look better in motion too, but I am not crazy about how it looks on her in these still shots.
Wait, what? Was the second vote on Evening Wear by Pottery Barn or on Unicorn Snot?
I love that Busy Phillips. Pottery caftan and all.
Me too. She’s my favorite thing about Michelle Williams. The red dress is very pretty, but she needs to stop with that closed-mouth half smile!
Me three! I’m going to pretend that she wore the caftan because she didn’t want to upstage her friend. (Just like a good friend would do)
I’m with those who are confused by whether “that other one” in the second poll, referred to Michelle’s black dress or Busy’s dress. I voted on Michelle’s second dress.
It was on Michelle’s second dress. There is no question to me that Busy’s was hideous, ergo, no poll.
I don’t care that much about the shoes with red. I think it’s fine. Not great, but fine – could be great with a few adjustments, I guess. But WHY is she wearing a gold tire chain around her wrist? That bracelet is just so weird and jarring with a dress that has that delicate lace. Plus, yellow gold seems the wrong choice with that red – some nice platinum and diamonds might have been called for, n’est ce pas?
That second dress looks like the formal version of the frock that’s going to be on the cover of Modern Empress.
I am happy she is wearing a color, and delighted that she not wearing a crew neck. BUT. I am not convinced that this red is a good shade for her. Her skin looks ruddy against it, and I don’t think it works with her new red hair (says the redhead, who has never quite figured that bit out). Anyone with me?
Not sure you should ever wear red shoes with a red dress. Isn’t there a fashion rule about that?
I quite like the hem and the dress overall, and I don’t mind the red shoes per se, though I agree a shoe with a bit more interest could have really pulled this together more. But I still just can’t get over how completely odd Michelle Williams’ face looks. So odd. Almost as odd as Busy’s caftan dress because, seriously, what the hell?
The color is fine. Better than the boring neutrals she usually wears. But during the show when she walked, it wrapped around her ankles and the entire tail of it kept poking forward between her shins. It was very distracting. Did she not walk forward and back in front of a mirror or a good friend?
I have a hard time Fugging anything that Busy Phillips wears, or for that matter, does.
She exists in a sphere that is entirely separate from ours, and entirely awesome. Call it The Freaks And Geeks Effect.
YES! I realized recently that the reason I’m the only one in my circle of friends who likes Seth Rogan is because, to me, he’ll always be Ken Miller. Anyone who had something to do with that show is always going to be in my good books.
I would think that would make you MORE willing to fug it — as in, wanting her to do better by herself and look as good as she can.
The shoes are terrible, but I’m glad that Michelle is wearing red. I’m convinced that Busy is pregnant again — at least, I hope she is, because that would explain the shapeless dresses that she’s been wearing lately.
The lame’ on the second one is much too much.
Nothing could ever be worse than when Joey Potter sang her mugger to death.
I think she looks divine, shoes and all.
Am I the only one that thinks she is starting to look a little like Julie Andrews? Like at any minute she is going to be running around the mountains and escaping from the Germans.
Ah ah ah ah ah!
I wore the pink version of those shoes when I was a bridesmaid in my brother’s wedding…in 1998. So.
@Lindsay – yes, I think so, too.
Busy is a true friend, dressing to look terrible so that Michelle looks so much better by comparison. The sad thing is Michelle looks FINE — not as spectacular as we wish, but still fine — and she would have looked better if Busy did, too.
I don’t know if Busy even has a stylist (maybe not?) but there are styles that help balance out a short neck. She needs to invest in those and avoid everything with big shoulders forever and ever.
How can someone’s name be “busy”?
Her birth name is Elizabeth Jean Philipps. From IMDB:
“Philipps was born in Oak Park, Illinois. Her parents gave her the nickname Busy because as an infant she was always moving. The nickname stuck; it even appears on her credit cards, but not her drivers license (as she stated on an episode of Wendy Williams 12-7-10).”
that’s kind of coll actually, thanks!
FAB on both of Michelle’s dresses & FAB on her hair and makeup! Busy = FUG!!!
Lose the headband, doll.
Short hair looks best on a sharper, more angular shaped face… More drama, please… Drop earrings, hair gel?
Red dress, no. Black dress, better…
I like the red shoes. Interestingly, I HATE red. But I would wear those shoes.
And the shade of her hair is fantastic.
I like, I LIKE!!
I would like the red more without the lace top.
I am really confused as to whether the second poll is about michele williams’ second dress, or busy phillips’ nightmare. It looks like most people think its the latter, I hope, because that black dress was rockin! Comparing it to anything fluid-y that came out of a child saddened me.
