I was all set to put this particular look up for a vote, but then I ended up talking myself into loving it:
I think the bottom is a little weird — the beading is amazing, so the ruffles feel superfluous, and also kind of make the dress look hairy, which is not GENERALLY the way you want your dress to look, unless you’re going to a birthday party for Chewbacca — but on this whole I think this is, as Victoria Beckham would say, if we were friends, which we are in my head, MAJOR.

From the neck up is too Addicted to Love for me.
That totally goes with the fact that he bottom looks like a pair of Gene Simmons’ boots from an 80s Kiss tour.
I was thinking more like a Transformer…
Love it. She looks like the Empire State Building.
*snort*
me three
I was going to say the Chrysler Building … but yeah.
You nailed it! And yeah, the Chrysler.
For the record, I’d probably rather wear a really beautiful viaduct.
At best this is a Scroll Down Fug.
Maybe I would be willing to give this a chance if Posh was actually the one wearing it. She is MAJOR enough to pull this off where as Camilla most certainly is not.
Pretty good overall, but the girls are getting squished.
No. No I can’t love this…. the bottom looks like those pads catchers wear …. or knee armor. The top half is cute!
Beauuuuuutiful! I can even love that she popped out of a vase taken from the entry hall of a New Orleans brothel, although it was unnecessary given the beauty of that unembellished, black sequined dress.
Thumbs up from the waist up. From the waist down….I don’t even know where to start. Ug.
The beaded portion should not have ruffles. And possibly, Victoria Beckham is mentioned here because…her smile has gone underground, as with Camilla’s in this particular shot.
If Camilla was aiming at ferocity, well done from mid-calf up.
Full on Scroll Down Fug. I cannot get on board with the bottom.
It should have stopped at the knees. With her severe slick hair and the Art Deco skirt arches, she looks like one of a pair of fancy candlesticks on a Victorian parlor mantle.
If it had only two out of three of the following I could sign off reservationless:
1) illusion netting
2) beading
3) butt tulle
I’m asking a serious question here, because I feel out of the loop. I see this mentioned a lot: Why, exactly, is illusion netting bad? I’m not criticizing those who hate it, just wondering when that memo came out and where I was. Because, as a busty girl, there’s something sort of comforting about that thin layer of fabric helping to hold stuff in place, no?
Also, though I’m not nuts about the ruffles, I think overall this is stunning. Very art nouveau.
I don’t like the bottom at all!
Sue, i dont know about others but i just dont like the look of the nude/skin coloured netting.
Sue– I do hate illusion netting, but I wouldn’t call the sheer black top of this illusion netting. I think it’s more a designed part of the dress, intended to show. I think of illusion netting like nude pantyhose stretched over your torso somewhere. It’s usually visible since we’re all not the same color, and it just looks tacky. I feel like it’s better to design a dress that works than rely on illusion netting. I will say the most successful one I’ve seen was on this site:
http://gofugyourself.com/oscar-fug-carpetwell-played-performance-mandy-moore-02-2011/83rd-annual-academy-awards-arrivals-36
That dress went up to her collarbone, but you really couldn’t see it.
Yes, not all sheer fabric is illusion netting, just the beige quasi-invisible variety. “Illusion” is the problem for me, it’s trying to be something it’s not. It’s a favorite of ice skaters who win prizes with eye-popping costumes that look like body paint, but are actually sturdy athletic gear. It’s like pantyhose, or in Fug Parlance “backy-hose” when on the back. The illusion just does not fool the eye when photographed up close.
I don’t like the ruffles, but otherwise, I DO love this look, despite, as mentioned above, the simliarity to the Chrysler Building.
I do love me some art noveau!
I kind of like this (all of it) even though it reminds me of a fancy knife sheath or colorful gun holster as it almost seems closed off at the bottom.
I kind of really like this. It’s very art deco and glamorous.
I dunno, I think maybe she’s going to be playing formal hockey?
HAH.
From the bosom up – no. Below the bosom – yes! I love the architectural-ness of it. But from the bosom up it’s boring and unflattering. And I just can’t stand the see-through top. I don’t know why, but to me it’s tacky. This would have been better with something like a scooped boatneck and cap sleeves.
You say the bottom is a little weird … a LITTLE WEIRD? That has got to be the GFY understatement of the year.
It’s gorgeous! I bet in person it’s even better. I’d like it even better if it lost the ruffles and just was sleek throughout.
I really love this, though that may be my love of Art Deco talking. (The Met has an amazing collection of French Art Deco furnishings. Just…love.) I might like this better as a shift, though – sort of a swingy flapper-type deal to better play off the Roaring ’20s-style beading.
Daring and fabulous–and she pulls it off, as usual.
I am not a fan of Belle’s looks. In fact, I have no idea who she is or what she does, like many ladies who appear on this website. Because even though I like looking at pretty, shiny things, and I enjoy other people’s witty commentary, and I enjoy composing my own, inane, trivial commentary, I just hate teevee. That’s right. You have met the enemy, and she has some things in common with you. Some day, in the war-torn aftermath, perhaps we will rebuild the town well together, and laugh shyly together about our youthful differences.
However, man, can Camilla Belle pull off the slicked-back side part! That’s where she shines. Too, art deco is fabulous, I think by definition.
Gorgeous. Graphic. Perfect ! And Camilla looks so good in it.
Lose the ruffles, and I want it! Though I think I’d like it better without the netting, with maybe interesting spaghetti straps that pick up on the beading on the bottom. Yes, that’s it! But she looks gorgeous as is, anyway.
Love it. I love art deco, so I’m very happy with the design. I am SO GLAD her hair is pulled back so the focus is on the gown. Perfect styling…except I don’t think she needs BOTH bracelets with that much going on in the gown’s lower half. That’s a small ding, though. Overall: great!
I don’t like her, so I’m predisposed to hate anything she wears, but this…I would probably hate on anyone.
major scroll down fug….from the knees up it is gorgeous.
I bet this is was Spaz de la Huerta things her make-up looks like
She looks absolutely amazing. I love everything about this look–the slicked back hair, the scarlet lips, the intricate beading, the Art Deco look. I still don’t know why she’s famous but she sure as hell knows how to wear a dress.
For me, the beading evokes electronic circuits.
It’s BEAUTIFUL, it just doesn’t work as a dress. I’m reminded of Krikkit shin guards, or the resplendant jeweled battle shorts of the G’Gugvuntt and Vl’hurgs …
Or a very swanky hood ornament.
I’M IN LOVE! This is absolutely AMAZING! Just GORGEOUS! This is Hollywood Regency meets Art Deco in an ESPECTACULAR dress! She looks GREAT… Makeup is perfect, hair is sleek & shiny, jewels are sparkling! I ADORE IT! COVET.IT.ALL!!!!!!!!!!
“… A SPECTACULAR DRESS…” Sorry!
This is a wee tad crazy but I love it. Because she carries the sleek/sophisticated/sharp enough to cut vibe throughout, from the hair to the makeup to the entire dress, it totally works, and she has the attitude to carry it off. Awesome look.
I put this in the category of SPECTACULARLY played.
I can’t get past how the beading and ruffles look like fancy saloon doors waiting to open, so then I keep looking under the waist for something that surely indicates a jumpsuit in hiding. If I’m not thinking about the ninja jumpsuit, I am waiting for the chief from the Village People to rip open his Camilla Belle Halloween costume to reveal his amazing formal chaps on their own. I know the beading and ruffles give the visual interest, but there’s just too much cognitive dissonance. Hoist the neckline up an inch or two, cut off at the knee, and it’s still very Great Gatsby, with or without the sheer section. The beading and ruffles just make this too bottom heavy.
Love the dress but….why is she??? I don’t get it!
I think her name is a symphony, try saying it aloud and not smiling. Luv the dress, luv the hair, luv the confident red lippie.
I am with those who said Scroll-Down Fug. Too bad…the top part is pretty.
Yeah, I love the Art Deco look of this. It’s really fashion-fashion, not regular fashion, and I love that when it’s done well.
I think this dress is hideous.
her skirt looks like an art deco centipede is crawling up her leg.
YES! Hel you nailed it – my first thought when I saw this was ‘circuit board’! Amazing dress though, I would love to wear it to flounce around my flat (would never have the verve to wear it outside the house
).
But where are her feet? It looks like she’s standing in a fancy umbrella stand.
Did she finally get her eyebrows done? They filled up half the screen in From Prada to Nada.
I have no idea who she is, but who cares? Perfect hair, make-up and accessories for such a statement frock. She wears it beautifully, and I love the whole look.
I know I’m late to the party, but I’d like to add my voice to change the overall reaction from scroll-down fug to SPECTACULARLY well played. Her face is stunning, her hair, her make-up, her POSE (SNAP SNAP SNAP) and her dress is… I have no words. I literally went WHOA and my jaw dropped when it appeared on my screen. I think people here maybe love hearing themselves making analogies al Fug Girls a little too much, because I don’t see any of those silly comparisons. I see amazing Art Decadence sequined LOVE. I hope she keeps this up, because I think this is the kind of crazy she’s been trying to pull off many times before and this is where it needs to be. Can’t wait to see more!
I think it looks like giant centipedes are crawling up her legs.
I wish you’d gone with your original instinct and put it to a vote. I know I still would’ve lost, but it would’ve been so satisfying to click the little circle next to ‘BAD! VERY, VERY BAD!’
Haha i like how you express yourself about J Lo’s pomp n show to this dress here…… a lil too mean sometimes tho! but well who am i kidding, we all love some of these celebs and then there are those who we hate, with all the emotion that our heart can hold. job well done
