Well Played, Gwyneth Paltrow

well-played

I think what I love most about this photo is not even the dress.

It’s the very CAREFUL way Gwynnie appears to be leaving this restaurant, as if maybe she had one sangria too many, and/or really regrets that $60 glass of port, and now she’s just focusing. Really. Hard. On. Walking. Without. Tripping. We have all been there. I think I spent four years there in college and scored enough credits for it to be my minor. But the outfit is good, too — leave it to Gwynnie to mix clashing hues and have it somehow come out all right. That woman.

I love this. I especially love orange on blonds. I’ve never wished I was a blond except for those times I’ve wanted to buy something orange! Maybe it’s me, but the bright orange never looks as good with my dark brown hair. I have to love the color from afar.

Anyways… I want her turn-lock bracelet and snakeskin clutch!

Why don’t I look that good when I’m teetering out of restaurant after too many cocktails? I end up looking like Tara Reid and that isn’t good.

Or maybe not so allright. I like the dress; I like the shoes. They don’t work together. I love her expression. Like she can’t quite see where she’s going.

I think it works because the red shoes are an orangey red themselves.

I have relatively fair skin and dark reddish brown hair and wear orange all the time, and get compliments every time I do. You should just try it out Jamee, there’s a shade of orange out there for you!

And yes, the color of the shoes works with the dress, but the shoes in general…yuck. I hate the open toe bootie nearly as much as I hate the giant platform hoof heel.

I’m gonna assume that her clutch is REAL snakeskin, and if it is… why is it that so many people feel fear and loathing at the sight of a snake, and yet are perfectly okay with shoes or purses make from its skin? Personally, I’m just the opposite… I don’t fear (non-poisonous) snakes, but the last thing I’d want is a snakeskin purse or pair of shoes. Snakeskin looks beautiful on a snake, but hideous on wearing apparel.

I agree with Esmerelda, the color of the shoes works with the dress, but I hate the shoes themselves.

Surprisingly I do like the dress even thought I’m not a fan of orange or Gwynnie. The dress must be magic. Either that or the fact that she’s so obviously doing the careful walk of 1 cocktail too many is funny enough that it thawed my frozen heart a little.

This may be the first and last time I say this about her: I LOVE LOVE LOVE the entire look. LOVE.

I want the shoes to be shoes and not booties, but I love the colour and shape of the dress.
Also, I WANT her bracelet. I also want her legs, looking awesome here!

She may not have imbibed too much. The bottom of that heel is about as big around as an ice pick. She may just be blinded with the camera flash and trying not to fall off her shoes.

@amy – that excuse didn’t work for LiLo, nor does it work for Ms. Goop – who looks amazing, but a little drunk.

She looks great, but sheesh, I am so over the shoobooties.

She looks pretty good, for her. I am not a fan of hers, so that IS a compliment!
The dress is very nice, as is the color of those shoes. I will agree with the rest when I say “down with the open-toed booties, already!” But I like the color and, had they been actual shoes, they would have worked.
I also feel a little warmer toward Gwenyth here, as it is fairly obvious she is doing the drunk “No, I’m not drunk” walk. I’ve never tried it in heels like that, though, so good for her for not falling into a puddle on the floor.

Dear Lord, I had really really hoped the FugGirls hasn’t joined team Goop. Paltrow is just an all-round shitty human being who has had everything handed to her in life, from falling out of a rich white woman’s vagina til now, and yet still writes articles about being, you know, a workin’ mom, just like you. Don’t join the Minivan Majority, ladies!

No, these don’t work together for me. I like the dress, looks very good on her. The shoes are fugly and I too am over the whole shoobooties. Thanks @amys!
Like the clutch too, still can’t stand her. :P

love it, want it, might have to go get it. i *think* the orange dress is belted? I feel like i saw her on another website.

that bracelet is amazing, thanks for pointing it out in the comments.

also don’t hate the shoobooties for some reason…maybe it’s the color that makes them less awful?

This would have been a home run, if the shoes were strappy sandals and she had some polish on her toenails.
I’m with the “death to the shoe-bootie” crowd.
Ladies, your feet are supposed to look pretty, not like animal hooves.

I am never going to abide by this type of shoe.

I’m with Molly, black strappy sandals and a pedicure. I have no hate in my heart for the shooties, and might even wear them myself, but only with jeans.

I LOVE the dress. Unfortunately, I hate the shoes. It’s not the color, I just never got on board the bootie train. [I just realized that sounds kinda dirty, but you know what I mean].

  21. Anne B

    SHOOTIES. Thank you, @vandalfan.

They are the shoes that look good on no one — least of all in this incarnation. If they can’t look good in red, in whatever this lacquer-finish is, on this woman, they can’t look good.

GOOP, do yourself a favor and scoot (as it appears this is all you can do, in that getup) to the edge of the nearest cliff. Fling those things off it.

And take that sweet dress dancing, in some lovely, normal shoes.

I love it all, too, especially the look on the face. :)

Those things on her feet are horrific. It looks like she dipped her tootsies in the red wax they put on edam cheese and then used it to stick the soles and heels to them.

The dress, however, is full-on awesome.

Those shooties are just awful. Hate. I would love to see a strappy shoe in a gray, to pick up the colors in the awesome bracelet and clutch, or subtle metallic. The orange looks great on her.

  25. Tracy L

Agree with so many of you–the dress is great on her but my i hate those peep-toe boots. All peep toe boots.

  26. CJ

The dress, necklace and bag are all great, but the bracelet and the shoes are just not doing it for me. I’m a big fan of Bonnie Cashin, but using her turn lock design on a bracelet looks just plain silly. And those shoes! Horrible and they look like they are torturing her feet to boot. (Pun intended.) Something light and strappy in snakeskin (too match?) or a metallic or even a nude shoe would have been MUCH better.

Also, what’s up with her hair? I was one of those 20-somethings who chopped off her hair in the 90′s because her short ‘do looked SOOO good, but I just don’t understand the stringy hair. This woman probably spends an arm and a leg on her wardrobe and grooming, so why does she purposely have her hair cut so it looks thin and fried?

  27. annie

This looks like a hot mess to me. I like the dress, necklace, and clutch but the shoes and bracelet are horrible. And, most importantly, none of them look good together! Add to that the apparent lack of grooming and it is just not working for me on any level. I’m pretty sure that Gwennie spends plenty on professional hair and makeup advice but it looks like she’s walked out of the house after frying her hair with the blow drier and straightening iron and doing nothing else. ugh!

  28. caprice

the outfit’s great (such a great color), but why does her hair always look so stringy and unkempt? i’ve seen it in the past cut into a cute bob, so i know it can be done. she’s got eleventybillion dollars and stylists at her beck and call! why can’t her hair look nice?

*sigh* The booties are back. Goddamnit. No one looks good in these damn things.

I love the dress and that bracelet is cool, but I feel like Gwynnie is currently restaging her “I’m a regular girl” campaign and I’m not buying it.

Hate the shooties, love the dress, but don’t like it on her. There’s nothing drawing the eye upwards; her face and hair look totally blah. Am I the only person who doesn’t find her all that striking?

HATE the shoes – shoebooties – shooties. Whatever they are called, I hate them with a blinding fury. Love the dress; love its color; chagrined to admit that I love it on her, but there is is.

I ♥ Gwyneth and I don’t know anything about GOOP! I like this look, it works for her and I would wear that dress happily!

GFY Heather: You were much more fun in University than I was; I almost got a minor in Theology!

@GiaMarie: GET A LIFE!!! Stop hating on Gwynnie, who’s awesome, and the FugGirls for liking her!

Imagine this with Holly Valance’s shoes (and pedicure), instead of these Makers Mark wax booties, and we can talk….

Plus, GP oughtta look into that mouse problem in her closet; rodents have nibbled the toes off her boots.

I would love it 100% if the shoes were regular booties. Please, no more effin toes!!!

No, no, I don’t think it works at all. That’s a good shot of the dress…in others I’ve seen it drapes all bulky over her right shoulder, like she’s in a roman toga. The bust isn’t flattering at all even in this view. Her face often looks blotchy and shiny to me, definitely does here. Does she go in the sun?? (My neighbor here in LA was sunning herself full out in her yard this week when the temp was almost 100, then proudly walked around with a bright red decolletage.) Jewelry and bag are all at odds with each other. Booties would be cute with some other outfit and color. She always has an air of ultra-elite. Can’t stand her but she is talented.

GiaMarie: So what do you expect her to do? NOT live a privileged life? Hate her because she was born to privileged parents? I’m not saying she’s sugary sweet–she’s pretensious as hell–but hating someone because of her privileged roots and upbringing is just…pathetic.

With that said, BLACK SANDALS?! SERIOUSLY?! Talk about RUINING an outfit. Gold? Okay, yes. But BLACK? UGHHHHHHH.

I sort of love that she seems to have a real tan, not a fake one. I know it’s bad for you, but maybe a real tan once every 10 years is okay. Moderation, right? Because she looks good all sun-shiny. She was a native Californian before she went New Yorker.

I’ve successfully avoided all interviews she’s given. I’ve never seen her as herself! Hee.

I like the top of the dress, but the hem looks kind of, well, trashy. And a definite NO to both the color and style of the shoes.

I’m coming to the defense of GiaMarie. Fishsticks is a horrible person who doesn’t even acknowledge the fact that most people in the world can’t afford $3000 for a trenchcoat. I can also guarandamntee you that Fishy wouldn’t give you the time of day unless she could drop your name to make her look cooler ( Beyonce and Jay-Z ).

And GiaMarie wasn’t hating on Goopy just because she was born to privilege, but because she was born to privilege but then tries to play it like she’s just your average, everyday working mom who feels your pain. Blech.

Re: the look — the dress isn’t horrible. That’s about the best I can say for it. The booties are beyond hideous. Goop has always loved the bootie, and wears them all of the time, and I think they are the most godawful pieces of crap ever invented. They are hideous and look good on NO ONE. I don’t like using any animal’s skin for fur or clothing, so I hate the clutch on principle. The bracelet is yuck. Her hair is really bleach-damaged, but still looks better than it has recently. I’m glad she has a tan, or the dress would be absolutely terrible on her.

All in all, I loathe Goop. And this look. And I hope she had a killer hangover in the morning.

I don’t even LIKE Gwyneth, but Shannon, those are pretty strong words. What exactly has she done to make her a “horrible” person? Horrible people are malicious, violent, vengeful, nasty human beings. So Gwyneth is a pretentious, hoity, stuck up snot, yes, but a “horrible person”? Seriously, WHERE DO PEOPLE COME UP WITH THIS STUFF?? It’s downright LAUGHABLE when disliking a celebrity because they’re rich and prententious (me) turns into loathing and calling them horrible people. Hilarious.
