Well Played, Kate Middleton

well-played

I saw on the internet yesterday that people were speculating that Kate is knocked up. BECAUSE OF THIS.

To which I say: you have GOT to be kidding me. This is a totally cute dress — Stella McCartney, I officially offer you a stay of execution! — but Bump-Concealing? No. It’s not a Herve Leger bandage dress (and thank god, because Kate Mids in a bandage dress is one of the signs of the apocalypse, along with my intentionally buying Diet Pepsi and Katie Holmes getting back together with Tom Cruise), but it’s ALSO a totally normal dress that non-pregnant people wear all the time and basically doesn’t hide anything other than maybe lunch.  I mean, I love me some Unsubstantiated Bump Theories, as you guys know, but COME ON.

Forget the dress, just look at those absolutely perfect, summer-pantyhosed legs!! Gorgeous!!!!

Agreed. But has she been wearing gloves with short sleeves a lot (which is completely appropriate for a Duchess, I suppose) or is it just an illusion that she has tan lines just above her wrists?

you mean ‘summer-pantyhosed sticks’? I don’t understand how people don’t talk about how terribly thin this girl is. I think she looks very unhealthy. her clothes don’t even fit half the time bc she’s so thin!

        +1

Bessy, mostly we don’t talk about it because the basic rule at GFY is talk about the clothes, not the body underneath.

Also, the amount of muscle you can see on her legs, and her arms (both above and below the elbow) and the minimal amount of skeletal structure that pokes through (especially on those exposed joints) points to a woman with a slight frame who is at a healthy weight for her body. Potentially slightly under-weight, but not enough to be frightened for her health. Admittedly I might like some of her looks more if they were more tailored, but I think if I were in her position, I’d want an inch or so of “breathing room” so if I need to eat at an event, my dinner wouldn’t be visible through the clothing (see the dress DiKrug wore recently where her torso was on display beneath the fabric, so she looked like a Grecian sculpture).

Nice! I don’t dig everything she wears like some people, but this is lovely. Glad she’s sporting some color.

The dress is a great color and you’re right that it’s not at all bump concealing. It’s not actually totally cute though. They don’t show in this picture, but two words—boob fins. The dress has these weird embellished darts that are just awful and kind of vintage McCartney in that they’re ugly and dumb for no good reason. Kate wore the dress as well as anyone could and better than it had a right too, but boob fins are still not good.

Yep. Boob fins ruin the otherwise pretty dress. Stella’s stay of execution should be lifted.

Oh my god. The hair. Her HAIR. It’s especially shiny and bouncy and curly and effing beautiful in this shot. The colour of that super cute dress probably helps, too. But the hair. I can’t even.

That was my first thought too! Holy crap HER HAIR. How can I get that onto my own head?! WHAT IS HER SECRET?

My sole mission in life is to find out HOW her hair is so magnificent! It’s amazeballs.

Mine too! I always ooooooooooooooooooooooo over her hair, so jealous.

One thing Kate does is maintenance, maintenance, maintenance with her hair. She gets trims quite often and probably spends as much time in a salon in a month as I do all year.

I’m sure she’s using great products, too, but if you don’t keep your hair maintained with regular trims, it’ll look unhealthy pretty quickly.

Hair extensions and a daily blow dry I guess!

Are we still pretending we don’t think she wears extensions?

Probably not. I think we’re still pretending her hair doesn’t have employees.

I know, right? I was just like, “Her hair is ridiculously awesome.” I mean, seriously, how is this even humanly possible?

I love that dress, and it’s exactly the kind of thing I avoid buying because the cut of it will show any slight curve of the belly. Which is probably why she’s holding her hands in front of it, even though she seems just as thin as always.

I have had no less than 6 people assume I’m pregnant in the last year and I’m NOT being expected to produce the heir to a throne so I can’t imagine how much pressure she must feel every time she chooses an outfit.

Any idea who made her necklace, GFY? It is really pretty. Also probably out of the price range of mortals, but I might as well ask.

    • calathea

The press here are actually claiming her necklace is a ~scandal, because it’s Cartier and cost £49,000. Not in keeping with Austerity Britain, we’re told.

      • Anu
        0

I was going to jump in and say that I hadn’t heard about any bun- in- the oven rumors but I did see the outrage at supposedly spending $76,000 on a Cartier necklace and it not being FLASHY enough for refinery 29 , followed by suggestions on cheaper, prettier (according to them) options.

When she does finally decide to produce a royal heir I’m guessing there’s going to be a baby explosion all over the planet! Also I love that color on her. Her hair as always STUNNING.

The complaint about the necklace not being flashy enough reminds me of a (true) story:

Pre-divorce Sarah Ferguson came to the US once, bringing her wardrobe of fancy clothes and expensive jewelery. The jewelery case was accidentally sent as checked baggage and one of the baggage handlers at La Guardia stole it. The jewelery was eventually found buried in his back yard. He had attempted to give some of the very expensive pieces to his girlfriend and his mother but they refused to accept them since the over-elaborate styles looked so tacky.

Kate’s taste in jewelery is, like her taste in clothes, for simple and flattering designs. The necklace is gorgeous and just right with a simple jewel-neck dress.

Ohhh, now I see the boob fins. Still, an elegant look when her hair’s covering them, love the color, and she does have glorious hair. I suspect some extensions have been added, but it was always beautiful hair naturally anyway.

But her hands are in front of her womb! She MUST be pregnant!!

I suspect the rumors are from another shot, from the side, where she’s talking with some folks and sort of bending forward. That shot creates a little “bump” where a bump ought to be…but I’m quite sure it’s just a result of the placement of the waist.

She looks great. As. Always. I kinda wish she’d stop making it look so dang easy. I’m starting to get delusions I can pull off her style without the royal funds to back it up.

I’m just shocked that Stella McCartney designed something so normal and pretty.

The dress is cute (other than the boob fins, which I agree look typically Stella-weird in the other pics), but all I can think of is the SEVENTY-EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLAR NECKLACE. From “her own private collection,” according to the articles I saw. HOLY FRICKIN’ FRACKIN’ CRAP!

Lurrrrrve the color! I can’t wait til one of her people writes a tell-all that reveals what and to which god they sacrifice for that hair. ‘Cause I wanna do it too.

Man, if I had people going that insane over every style choice or weight fluctuation, I’d probably retaliate by getting Anne Hathaway’s London Premiere Sack in every color, and wearing nothing else, just to taunt them. Heh.

Thank heavens she’s finally wearing some jewelry! The necklace looks great with this dress.

Now if I could just convince her how amazing bracelets are, particularly bangles.

Love the dress and the hair and that she’s wearing blue because Prince Harry recently wore blue and they are clearly having an illicit affair and communicating to one another via fashion.

I think she’s prego too! The look on her face, like she’s queasy or hungover, is classic early pregnancy! Plus self-consciously keep her arms around her waste and looking kinda ticked off in general to be in formal clothes- doesn’t mean she looks fat, just uncomfortable in her own skin.

    • Linney
      +1

I’m early pregnant and I don’t believe I ever walk around with a “look” on my face indicating queasiness or being hungover. I’ve seen other pictures of this event with her and I think she looks perfectly pleasant and not ticked off at all. Whether she’s pregnant or not (and I believe not), trying to assign universal signs of pregnancy to her is just silly.

Dress is OK for me. Not my favorite, but serviceable. Yes, serviceable. That’s the perfect word. I love it when I find the perfect word. I’m with the peeps who notice the seaming issues. I’m only really commenting because I snorted a little Diet Coke out of my nose when I read the bit about buying Diet Pepsi being a sign of the end of days. I relate. You gals are hilarious.

Sigh. I have absolutely nothing against this lovely girl, but I dread…DREAD…a pregnancy announcement from her and her husband. (It will obviously come eventually but still) The press will be relentless and it will be a DAILY bombardment of no-need-to-know info. My wish for her is that she’s able to disappear to some remote location for a few months and return with a baby in her arms and say “hey, guess what!” and spare herself the scrutiny, and spare US the daily choke of ‘baby bump’ coverage. Because if this is how it is even before…..sighhhhhh :(

    • Jessica

But if she does THAT, people will start saying IT’S NOT HER BABY!!!??!!?!!!!111!!!

I vote for her going away for months 4-7 and coming back into public view for months 8-9. That way no speculation that she wasn’t really producing the heir to the throne, but less coverage of her gestational state, than say, what is given to zoo animals during the first attempt at saving the population of that species….

Looks great, as per usual. Love the color of the dress especially– when I heard she was wearing Stella I anticipated something terrible, but this is decent.

Quesy? Hungover? I’ve been hungover before, and I never looked anywhere near that good in that condition. Hell, I don’t look anywhere near that good stone-cold sober. I don’t think she looks ticked off, either. She always looks delighted to be just where she is, doing just what she’s doing.

And I for one am growing more than a little tired of the constant “is she or isn’t she” pregnant hysteria. I’m sure Kate is well aware that she is expected to produce a royal heir in the not-too-distant future. Can’t she just enjoy some of the perks of being England’s favorite royal for a while longer? Good grief, it wouldn’t surprise me if people start clamoring for photos of her in the delivery room when the time coms.

this is what they say EVERY time she is photographed with her hands in front of her stomach…. which, you know, you only do when you’ve got a bun in the oven. its ridiculous

No, no, look at Suzi’s ink. With the boob fins, it’s just another unfortunate McCartney-ism, although more understated than her usual monstrosities. It’s as if the bodice was sewed on inside out by accident. This is not haute coture, it’s a joke.

And yet, The Duchess can even make THAT look good.

Glorious hair and bajillion dollar necklace aside, am I the only having a problem with the black shoes? They don’t quite work for me.

The stupid thing about pregnancy rumours is that they’re COMPLETELY pointless. If Kate was pregnant, we would know in less than 9 months anyway. And if she’s not, the media will just keep speculating and speculating and one day – maybe two or three or seven years from now – she’ll get pregnant and the papers will say “see?!? We KNEW she was expecting a baby.”
