Well Played, Kristen Stewart

well-played

Sooo ladylike:

That’s not  slam: I actually think this is a really nice change of pace for ol K. Stew. It’s flattering and kind of old school, but the pattern is graphic enough that she doesn’t look stuffy or boring (the belt helps, too). Rumor has it that she and Charlize are off to Cannes this week, and I could not be more excited to see what they trot out. Whoever is styling them is making some, um, really discussion-worthy choices, which sometimes is truly all I ask. Bring it on, lady!

Cut the sleeves off and hem it at the knee and I’ll like it more. But I must say this is a VAST improvement over that Marchesa disaster. I would actually wear this one!

I think the current length makes her look about 7 feet tall, which kind of makes me want that dress myself though I’d probably look like an extra-tall couch instead.

    Cute!

Except… okay, here’s my problem with K. Stew. Adorable girl. Let’s all forget the Marchesa monstrosity she wore to the Snow White premiere a couple of days ago. She’s a lovely girl. But you know that cliche “she’s letting the dress wear her”? KStew does that every time.

She wears insanely expensive clothing and somehow never looks dressed up. She always, always looks like her mommy lent her a dress for the big party. I sometimes wish she’d toss it all in and wear blue jeans and chucks since that’s clearly what she’d rather be wearing.

I agree. She did that recently for a BBC Radio (or TV) interview. Jeans, rock T and blazer. I thought she looked so adorable.

I will say, she does seem to be coming in to her own, or at least looks more comfortable during public appearances!

I usually agree, but I think she’s actually doing better in this outfit. That’s partially (maybe mostly) because she looks happy. She often looks totally miserable at these things.

She looks insanely tall and thin!

    • Jane
      0

She’s actually not that tall, she just looks it because her legs are long in proportion to her body; people who’ve met her seem to say she’s 5’3″ at the most (despite that Harper’s Bazaar interview a couple of years ago where she claimed to be 5’6″).

  4. Jasmine

Oh my god I covet that so much. She also looks more comfortable in it that she usually does, so hopefully it’s snuggly like the blanket it resembles– which is definitely a compliment.

I feel like this dress, and in general all the dresses she wears would actually look okay if she wasn’t ALWAYS standing like that- that side slouch/lean thing she’s made her signature stance for whatever reason.
It makes her look a) like she’s passing gas, b) a football player at times, c) like a wayward child forced to go to a family function and refusing to have fun, or d) all of the above.

I would rather Kristen stand this way than the typical starlet pose of legs crossed and hand on hip or with her leg bent in like she needs to pee (like Rooney Mara ALWAYS poses) or with her toes pointed in like Michelle W or Emily Browning ALWAYS pose) She looks good to me. Her legs are so long.

great dress, winning smile, and I can’t wait to see this movie.

She is pulling the length off and making it look good (do her legs EVER end?!). Fab, especially for her.

On anyone else the Marchesa would have been terrible. I’m not really sure where I come down on her, but I think she gets a pass in the crazy clothes department. What would have been awful and attention-getty on Lea Michele just looked hilarious on her.

  8. Art Eclectic

The sleeves look a little long, but otherwise this one is a home run.

  9. Lynne

Personally, I think the general acceptance of Marchesa as a legitimate designer is one of the great con jobs of our times.

Holy cow, she is smiling and her hair looks reasonable! That alone makes this one a win for me, but I do love that dress too. We’d all better save this picture in case it never happens again.

The sleeves look frumpy, like it doesn’t fit. I say make it sleeveless and we’d be in business.

I love the dress. But the hair still looks a mess. KStew never looks quite…finished. It’s always like she ran out of time and had to skip something, be it custom tailoring, hair, make-up, accessorizing. She never quite gets all the boxes ticked.

Loved the entire outfit, it was fitting for her, and a little different, for once, with the length.
Also, Kristen WILL be at cannes, her movie “on the road” is one of the films in competition for the big old palm d’or. Though i’m not sure about charlize, which is saddening, because you KNOW she would have done dior proud on the riviera.

She looks eleventeen feet tall! (Lucky girl.) I really dig this dress. I honestly cannot come up with a single thing I would change.

Plus one! I think it’s perfect. She looks miles tall, happy, relaxed, and the color and pattern are lively.

I’m with you! This is the prettiest I’ve ever seen her look, and the outfit is classic, flattering, and original. Good going girl!

She looks fabulous! Not many could pull this dress off, but she totally does.

It looks so HEAVY. Like a winter dress. Maybe a different pattern? She does look nice in it though.

    • Jane

Well, it is from the fall collection…

    • Kat
      0

YES. So glad someone else thinks it looks too wintery for May. I mean, it’s a lovely dress, but yeah, it just screams winter to me. Maybe I’m being old fashioned, but it ruins it for me a bit.

      • LibraryChick
        0

The question is whether we would respond as well to this design if it were in a springy madras plaid instead? I can understand the “too wintry” comments, but I think the black/red color combo fits the .Snow White and the Huntsman color scheme or aura quite nicely.

long legs, yes, but no shape/womanly curves … totally straight up and down.

Women come in all shapes and sizes…therefore she is “womanly” by the virtue of being female.

Right as I said “Oh, that’s kinda cute.” my husband chimed in with “Why is she wearing a carpet?”. Now I can’t unsee it.

I’d lose the sleeves altogether or widen the neckline to the shoulders. As it is , it’s giving me the impression that it’s suffocating and swallowing her at the same time. I’d even bring the hem up. She’s young, she has awesome legs, she should work them sartorially.

The posture is a lost battle, I fear. Unless, of course, she’s willing to balance a book on her head every day for half an hour.

Am I the only one who really hates her hair here? I honestly think she threw it up into a pony tail in the car ride over. I like the dress, and she is one of the few people who can pull off the mid-calf length.

I’ve always been a big fan of hers, but the recent June 2012 Elle magazine interview made her sound incredibly vapid, self-obsessed, and naive in a way that I thought she wasn’t. I think she’s sort of ruined for me now. (ok rant over!)

Here is a link to the interview: http://www.celebitchy.com/226815/kristen_stewart_covers_elle_refers_to_robert_pattinson_as_my_f–king_boyfriend/

Nah, her hair is bad. She’s been working a certain “coming out the gym with sweaty wisps and limp updos” look lately.

    • Kit

oh lord…if all of us were judged by our 22 year old selves… :|

I would certainly pass every test of annoyance/vapidity/narcissim/ignorance. We’re just … that way at 22, unless we’re very evolved, which most of us aren’t.

Thankfully, life teaches us, and we grow. (Again, most of us!)

I think she looks fabulous in this dress. It’s a hard length to pull off and I think she nails it. It’s very unlike her but I like it. I think back to when I was 22 and I highly doubt I would have been any more poised than she is. I think she’s really coming into her own as an adult. Lovely all the way around.

  23. Ro

A great look for her – I love the length and the belt does show her figure very well, especially from the back!

  24. Mahastee

I love this look. I would totally wear it.

I REALLY don’t care how 99% of folks are standing when they get their photo taken. Okay, I care about upright posture, but crossed legs, bent legs, one leg to the front (a la Posh) or relaxed legs like Kristen here, couldn’t care less and don’t know what everyone gets all worked up about.

At this point, anything is better than that monstrosity of a Marchesa dress. That thing was hideous. This is better; it’s cute.

  26. TaraMisu

I like! I wish it were shorter but she can pull this off. Well done!

I have the intense hunch that in person this must be stunning – stop-you-mid-drank style. I already love it, but I think it must be even better in action.

  28. vandalfan

    It’s an improvement.

  29. esther

her hair looks she forgot to do it.

the dress would be better with the sleeves chopped to halfway/three-quarter length.

it’s such a nice change to NOT see her in an uncomfortably short-looking mini or slashed-up-to-there dress.

the belt is cool, but i’m not sure that it really compliments this specific dress.

with that belt, i think chunky black strappy heels with gold accents would tie it together better than pointy black pumps.

My thoughts exactly. I think its its fug.
And she should wash her hair at some point.

The Marchesa was one of the most humiliating gowns I have ever seen on a woman.

That said, Kristen looks real cute here.

  32. Trendstop Trend Team

The chunky woven knit graphic of 10 Crosby by Derek Lam dress lifts the simple silhouette and the below the knee hemline gives it a Prada-esque look.
Styling wise, it would have been nice worn with tousled hair around her shoulders..but glad to see her fashion confidence building.

  33. Linney

Girl needs someone to do her hair and a good tailor. I can not overlook these facts, regardless of any Marchesa incidents.

  34. Amanda in Austin

I agree. I just wish it was just-barely-above-the-knee-length. I can’t stand that “just barely below the knee” length on skirts or dresses.

This dress belongs in my closet.

  36. Sandra

I know the “smoky eye” is her signature look, but she always looks to me like a raccoon who was in a fist-fight (paw-fight?) yesterday. I think it’s just too much for her delicate face. She is just a young-’un, so there is hope that she will continue to improve. If you want to wear a lean elegant dress and not look like your got it from your mommy’s closet, you need to stand up straight and tall.

She looks BEAUTIFUL AS ALWAYS, AND THE LONDON PREMIER DRESS WAS BEAUTIFUL! You all are just so damm jealous of her, hope your all tween’s! THAT’S WHAT YOU WRITE LIKE!

    • Linney

Yes, because when someone doesn’t like something, it MUST mean they’re jealous.

Hate to break it to you, but YOU sound like a tween (and write like a 9 year old-tween’s??). And a raving lunatic KStew fan.

Maybe better in Vogue with all the accompanying makeup and hair and everything.
