Well Played, Rooney Mara

well-played

Rooney Mara certainly doesn’t like to wear color, does she?

Luckily, there’s some good news here: A) she HAS started wearing color on her face, which means she doesn’t look washed out. And that red lipstick is perfect. I am always on the lookout for the perfect red. I think it makes you look like you’ve made an effort, and I automatically feel better with red lipstick on, but I also feel like it’s hard to find a red that isn’t too harsh. This one is almost pink and it’s lovely on her. B) I kind of hate those shoes. Wait, I guess that’s not good news.  So: C) I seriously LOVE the dress, no “kind of” about it.

I love it all, including the shoes. They’re so simple. I want them.

I love it. I know someone is going to harp on the pockets so let me do a pre-emptive defense of pockets: they are REALLY helpful when you don’t know what to do with your hands. My wedding dress has pockets and I intend to use them when I do not have a drink in hand.

I love me some pockets too, and I wouldn’t be without them in my everyday clothes. However, the only reason to put one’s hands in one’s pockets is because they are 1) cold, or 2) retrieving whatever random bits of flotsam you currently have in the pockets. They are not hand-garages. It’s always appropriate to clasp your hands lightly behind your back. or in front of you. It also looks relaxed but poised and elegant, rather than slouchy. See Her Majesty and Kate at

      for examples.

I do apologize for the rant-ish tone here and of course, it’s your wedding and you can do what you darn well please. I just really hate the look of pockets (especially with hands inserted) in women’s formal-wear.

I’m okay with looking slouchy, as I have not been trained to pose for cameras (unlike Ms. Middleton). Also, I plan to have a drink in my hand more often than not :)

I love me some pockets too, formal wear or otherwise. Maybe it’s because my hands are ALWAYS cold. So of course I love this dress. And I like how the French Dragon Tattoo poster roughly translates to: “MILLENIUM: Men who do not like Women”.

Just realized I began my comment with the exact same wording as Sandra *facepalm*. Sorry, today kinda sucks for me. So to comment again – I do really like Rooney’s makeup here. I wish she had put some polish on her toes to liven up those shoes though.

        Brilliant minds and all that……

        Hope your day gets better!

Pockets are also life-saving if, like me, you have chronic sniffles (allergies and a cold climate) and so need to always keep a tissue handy.

Did she look like this before her Swedish heroine role? I thought she looked more normal in real life, aka her Zuckerberg-girlfriend role? Or does she just enjoy carrying the characters on in real life until she gets her next role? And if this is true, can I hope for a role as a junior Carol Channing/Phyllis Diller type who runs away with the circus in a surrealistic, Buñeul-type film co-starring Clooney, Gosling and Bardem as her love interests/ringmasters?

I’m just wondering if she doesn’t know how to dress for this hair cut and color, you know?

It’s like she thinks she has to be edgy – with all the black and white and cutouts – because of the blunt haircut with jet black hair and apparently even paler skin. She needs to recognize that she can wear nice colors and cuts and softer makeup.

I agree, it’d be nice to see her dress more like a young Audrey Tautou or Natalie Portman during her growing out her head shaving era. Her look always seems to be “Lisbeth goes formal” which is just weird.

I dunno, I like it. I really, REALLY love Lisbeth’s style in the movie–if I had my druthers, that is basically how I would dress all the time (hair less extreme, though). I can imagine, after spending a lot of time in that world, not necessarily wanting to leap straight out of it.

Also, from what I heard, it sounds like she was very absorbed in the world of that movie and isolated from everything else. She might be having a little bit of Hollywood culture shock.

Miranda – I’ve read all the same reports. Yet it’s been months since they completed filming. Even the most dedicated method actor would be out of character by now, even if keeping the haircut and body image. (Unlike the Swedish movies, they were holding off on production on the final two movies until they saw the reception of the first.)

I’m not dissing Salander’s style. But that’s a character. Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep are fairly chameleon-like, but they don’t show up to their premiers dressed in character.

I really love this look. I think if the toe straps on the shoes were 1/2 inch wider they would look better.

Like the dress, like the makeup, even like the hair. I would like the shoes if it was summer and they were combined with some nice toenail polish, but right now they just make me feel cold. (It’s probably warm in CA but still too cold for those shoes.)

    • AJ

I agree, I think toenail polish would help the shoes.

Yes, she needs some color on her feet. Other than that, I like the dress, and her hair does look much better.

It’s VERY warm in California. But! This is in Paris, so she has no excuse. :)

Thank goodness there are no cut-outs or shoulder pads this time. Beautiful from the neck up. Shoes a little summery for my taste. But the bodice is off. The textured fabric of the skirt would look better than the plain black, and the faux bustier made of sequins sits far too low and makes The Girls seem almost droopy.

She has got IT. She looks lovely but there is more to it… undefinable appeal.

Love the dress, well done! The shoes…. not so much.

Of course she only wears black… it’s the only color that Lisbeth would deign to wear!

Just a bit of sarcasm, but this chick’s style was totally earthy Anthropologie pre-GWTDT and now it’s all about edgy scandinavian-like black/white couture. She does have the gamine face and body to pull it off well.

I think filming the movie changed her a lot… but I don’t think that’s BAD. She definitely stands out more now, and people’s styles do change.

Hell’s Belle’s! If I had to have a nipple pierced for a movie role, I’d be wearing black also! …you do know they (the piercers) use a hollow needle, ergo removing flesh from your tata.

    • Miranda

I was really, really hoping that was just some kind of clever fakery and not actual nipple piercing. No hate to anybody who’s into it, but I can’t even think about the pain of getting it done without squirming in misery.

Can there be a rule to NEVER wear sandal type shoes to an event, if you haven’t had a good pedicure and your toenails are polished.

OTOH, I LOVE that style of high heeled sandal. For my foot, it’s the most comfortable and flattering. Dress is adorbable.

Does Jen Aniston know that Rooney’s been raiding her shoe closet?

Those shoes are some serious fug. But THE DRESS! I WANT THE DRESS!

Ha ha. I know strappy shoes are supposed to be ‘so ’80′s’ but I don’t mind them at all. I actually quite prefer them to the shooves/stumpy booties/platform-heeled monstrosities that are de rigueur nowadays.

Loved her in GWTDT—she nailed it brilliantly—but IRL her face looks a little . . . I don’t know . . . vague, somehow. Not like Lisbeth but not like herself, either. And may I just ask: what IS it with red lipstick? Supposedly the ultimate red is every gal’s fashion Holy Grail, but, seriously, so few women look good in it. I’ve long given up. I’ll stick to beige-ey pinks and plums.

I don’t think this is really her personal style, but she looks great. I guess she’s staying in character to film the next 2 movies.

Jessica, might I recommend Revlon 007, “In the Red”? Finally found a red lipstick that is rich without being brown or purple or orange, plus it’s matte, and it rocks my socks off. I’m wearing it right now with my mustard yellow dress, in honor of GFY and condiments everywhere….

I know the comment wasn’t directed at me, but I’ve been looking for the perfect red lipstick since Avon discontiniued my favorite, so thank you for the suggestion, Edith!
