Well Played, Zoe Saldana

well-played

I’m going to make my Christmas list today.

It begins and ends with, “Everything in Zoe Saldana’s closet.” This is so cute it makes puppies look like gargoyles.

Really? I thought this looked like a particularly badly colored boxy sack that made her look really sallow.

  2. Natalie

This could be an inch or two longer. No?

I’m worried about her picking up an STD when she sits down.

  3. Sajorina

Hmmmm, I don’t like it! And, that would so not be my Christmas list!

  4. Carolina Girl

This looks like it was put together using the potholder craft thingys from the 1970s. It’s not bad, but it is a tad too short.

    • vandalfan

Beat me to it! She’s wearing a potholder like we made as Brownie Scouts. But with her charm and in those Loub’s, she almost pulls it off.

      • Geemee

OMG, I was a Brownie, too! And while this does look like a potholder (I think I still have mine somewhere), I love it. It’s so Laurie Partridge. All she needs is a tambourine.

  5. Jasmine

I freaking love this. It’s so cute and flouncy and fun and would actually look super cute on me, so please add me to share in your Christmas list, H. We can alternate days on which we wear this.

  6. Christian

Really? It’s a little young/twee for her (or anyone IMO). It looks like a placemat to me. Not a fan of the shoes or purse either. But I would ALSO like to rummage through her closet, she normally looks great.

  7. Eliza Bennett

Dang, GFY Heather, what puppies have you been looking at? Hairless chihuahuas? It’s a cutely patterned dress-fghan that belongs on a sofa.

  8. Lis

I love it as well -would also not look off on my Christmas list of “Everything in Joan Holloway/Harris’ closet”

  9. Jennifer

How the heck does Zoe Saldana do it? If I saw this dress on a hanger (or on just about anyone else), I’d be asking if it was the dress version of one of those color-blindness tests. But when she wears it, I think it’s adorable and lovely.

  10. Jessica

I love it, too. Obviously 70s-inspired, but in a fun way that doesn’t feel stale. And her hair and make-up match the theme.

  11. Anne B

I want it too. This is not a good thing, as on Zoe this looks effortlessly cute, while on me (I’m nowhere close to tall and rangy) it’d make me look like a 40-ish version of the kid who gets picked last for punchball at recess.

And the shoes … if Zoe’s looking for them later I swear I don’t have them. Do not! Do not infinity!

  12. islandgirl1

I love this! So cute, and I too want it so badly in a box with my name on it under our Christmas tree.

  13. theotherjennifer

    it’s a bit potholder-ish IMO

  14. Susan

    I totally agree. Great.

  15. SaraK

To wear 70′s style well, you have to be young enough not to remember the 70′s. Plus it doesn’t hurt to have Zoe Saldana’s body to go with those clothes. She does look great in this.

My Christmas list, like Lis’s, involves Joan Holloway’s closet, plus a few key items pilfered from the Duchess of Cambridge’s (that ruffled Burberry trench totally has my name on it!). My actual Christmas presents, however, are likely to involve Old Navy sweaters. I may not be styling, but I will be cozy.

  16. Alix

Girlfriend should start stepping away from the tweezers, though.

  17. Miranda

She looks boss, all y’all are crazy. I’m not a fan of that kind of hairstyle, but everything else is excellent.

  18. annabeth

Looks fabulous and fun, like 95% of what Zoe Saldana wears. I agree that it would be difficult for most people to pull this off — in this I would look not bad, but actually deranged — but she has both the slim figure and the playful attitude to make it shine.

    • annabeth

Oh, and her hair’s a little wispy on the sides, but I like to think that’s because she sped to the event in a sporty, vintage 1960s Mustang convertible.

  19. Breda

Love her, love it, CRAVE those shoes.

Man, I want to be friends with her. Both to hang out and to raid her closet.

  20. Natalie B

LOVE LOVE LOVE this. She looks great.

  21. Lina

Perfectly suited to her, right down to the bracelet, anklet, and hair. It also emphasizes just how insanely long her legs are. I really admire her/her stylists’ ability to choose dresses that are ideal for her looks and body type AND that are completely distinctive on their own merits.

  22. coexxi

I think the dress is quite cute (on her) but the shoes…. OMG. And not a OMG in a good way! She can barly stand in them and I wonder how she walks! They are so high it is ridiculous – the designer must be slightly sadistic (as a lot of the shoedesigners, must be in the job description).

  23. cathy

awesome! she is one of the rare people who know how to make the most of what mother nature has given them. she has lovely, petite frame, perfect proportons and she is having so much fun playing with patterns and shapes of clothes that would look awful on someone else. i usualy adore everything she wears, but even when i’m not 100% with her, she looks interesting and not generic starlet in some bland strapless mini dress

  24. mariarose

If there were an all-time Well-Played award, I think we’d have our front-runner.

  25. TonyG

Loving this so much. It’s bold and simple at the same time and fits her to a tee.

  26. Jacq

I love it! I don’t think it’s too short – I think it’s just the right length to avoid being too short, in fact: any longer and it would have been too shapeless. And I like the boxy style, too. With a print that busy, you want to keep the cut of the garment as simple as possible.

My only complaint about this outfit is the shoes, because I think the strap is distracting. But it’s no biggie – overall, she looks fabulous.

  27. Eva

I absolutely love it on her. I think on many other people it wouldn’t look half as good, but she really wears her clothes amazingly well. She has a nice figure but it’s more than that: posture, attitude… I don’t know but, most of the time, she sells whatever she’s wearing big time and she makes bold choices on top of that!

  28. TieDye64

So cute, so chic. I’m totally digging the 70′s vibe and the length seems just right. This dress is letting the print do all the talking. Girl is fierce. And seems nice. Bitch! :D

  29. Kate

This is bad, but I have this irrational desire for her to just go away for a little while. I don’t know why! Maybe because she’s everywhere and I fear for her brand-dilution.

I also don’t like this dress.

  30. deb

    MAKE. HER. EAT. SOMETHING.

  31. sally

I love this dress so much I’ve been googling all day to find out where I can buy it! It’s definitely not too short – any longer would be dowdy. I’m putting this in my top ten outfits of the year.

  32. Mahastee

So glad you ‘well played’ this. It could look boxy and unflattering on many other people but I think it’s gorgeous on her.

  33. lst

Normally love what she wears, but don’t like this – looks like bad vintage, and I don’t like the shoes either.

  34. Maria

LOVE IT! Not too short, definitely not twee, and the colour combination is a winner. Go Zoe!

  35. Emma

    Love her, love the dress.

  36. fritanga

I know Michelle Williams, Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Emma Watson have all been struggling over the “Chic and Gamine!” crown for a while now, but I think Zoe just stepped up and quietly took it away from all of them. This dress is a perfect example of understated, effortless, completely appropriate but never dull style.

I have no idea why Anna Wintour doesn’t hold Saldana up as America’s young fashion icon instead of slobbering over tacky old Boobs Legsley, who wouldn’t know style or class if they bit her on the butt. ::snits::

  37. Kathleen F.

On her, it’s amazing….on mere mortals, I can’t imagine it working nearly as well.

    • Kendra

Preach! I adore her, in this and everything. How is she so lovely? I want to be her when I grow up.

  38. Amanda

    LOVE.
